Introduction
Definition: An abstraction of functional aspects of a technical object (e.g. a power plant or a chemical reactor) or a
non-technical object (e.g. an economic enterprise or a living entity).
The behavior of a system is determined by the physical laws between the different sizes of the system. Many attempts
are made to describe, by means of a mathematical model (abstract, usually simplified), the relationships between the
input variables xe (causes) and the output variables xa (effects):
XA = F * Xe with F as so-calledTransmission function (mapping rules).
Often the temporal behaviour of the system is in the foreground of our interest, then we speak of the dynamics of the
system or of a dynamic system.Special properties, such as the constructive structure or the material nature of the
system to be considered, play no role here.
Process
▪
Definition according to DIN 19226: A process is a set of interacting processes in a system through which matter,
energy, or information is transformed, transported, or stored.
▪
The word 'totality' sometimes causes the terms' system 'and' process' to be synonymous. In practice, however, it is more
expedient to restrict the term "process" to the targeted part of the "total system“
Automation technology as a specialist discipline
▪
Definition: Automation technology includes methods, processes and measures as well as the tools and components
required to imprint a system's target-oriented, safe and self-acting behavior.
▪
According to this definition, automation is a general term for measurement, control and regulation (MSR).Sometimes it
even includes functions of control technology such as process monitoring and visualization. In the foreground, however,
is always the automatic process, i.e. the (targeted) influence of the process should be made without human intervention
by a specially designed automation device, Figure 1.1.2.
