MIDTERM REPORT PAPER A HANDS-ON STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT PROJECT Hand in date: the 10th week Students are officially required to form a team of 3-5 members, and then select a service organization legally operating in Vietnam or an F&B business with which they are well familiar, or either the one for which they have access to the required data / information. Each team is assigned to conduct a practical study on the chosen business, and to compare what they have learned during the class sessions with the strategic planning practices. Students have therefore been set the following tasks to complete in an essay format that will enhance their knowledge / concepts / theories and application of strategic planning in managerial perspectives. To complete the strategic planning report for a practical organization, each team should follow the below requirements. * OUTLINE (100 points in total) Chapter I. Introduction (5 pts) A brief summary of the selected organization, and reasons why you have significantly chosen that firm for your strategic management report. Chapter II. Practical Strategies in Action (20 pts) 2.1. Vision, mission and core values (5 pts) Identify the vision, mission, and core values of your selected business and evaluate the firm’s vision and mission statements are relevant and accurate in accordance with what the firm has targeted to grow. 2.2. Currently-used strategies in practice (5 pts) Describe the practical strategies (at least three strategies) that the firm has been applying to deal with the market trend and changing environment in the most efficient way, and meeting the organizational incentives of sustainable development. 2.3. Practical strategy evaluation (10 pts) Discuss whether the firm has successfully utilized the specific strategies in each business stage, and evaluate the firm’s pros and cons of these strategies. Chapter III. Strategy Planning and Formulation (40 pts) 3.1. Environmental and organizational audits (10 pts) Carry out an environmental audit (External Factor Evaluation – EFE), and produce an organizational audit (Internal Factor Evaluation – IFE), and then evaluate the key figures. 3.2. SWOT matrix and alternative strategies (10 pts) 1 Create a SWOT matrix and develop the firm’s relevant alternative strategies 3.3. SPACE matrix and IE matrix (10 pts) Design a SPACE matrix and IE matrix to match with the above-mentioned alternative strategies, and discuss on these matrices to match with the selected strategies. 3.4. The matching stage of alternative strategies (5 pts) Defend your choice of the key strategies (at least three) in a comprehensive and logical manner. Identify the firm’s competitive advantages and explain how the business changes toward the new incentives of strategies. 3.5. Future strategies (5 pts) Discuss further strategies toward the future growth for prosperity and sustainability. Chapter IV. Writing and presentation skills 30 Total 100 This mini-team project requires students to produce and submit a maximum 4,000 – 5,500 word paper including double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-font size MS Word. * Always support your arguments with relevant evidence and/or examples. * Referencing style: APA (6th ed. version) * Grading will focus on the following criteria: 1) Theory, concepts, and knowledge learned in class sessions and applied into the project paper. 2) Ability to use the concepts and theories that best applied to students’ selected strategic issues / strategic planning process and management in practices. 3) Ability to follow the detailed instructions from the in-charge instructor 4) The quality of the solutions and recommendations made toward strategic management 5) The skills with which the final paper is comprehensively presented to the entire course. 6) The overall strength of the final report paper. 2 Grading scales: weekly quizzes, in-class assignments, and exam/ test will be graded on a 100-band scale. The final grade for the course is the proportional average of the grade components, and will be rounded to one digit after decimal point.
