You move your eyes quickly over the page to find keywords that will lead you to a particular answer. It is reading rapidly in order to find specific facts. Use scanning in research to find particular facts, to study fact-heavy topics, and to answer questions requiring factual support. SKIMMING It is a technique used to skim an article to get the main idea, the author‟s purpose, and the method of organization of the material. Use skimming in previewing (reading before you read), reviewing (reading after you read), determining the main idea from a long selection you don't wish to read, or when trying to find source material for a research paper. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 YOUR TEXT Words of Wisdom Damiana L. Eugenio, the mother of Philippine Folklore compiled and edited what may very well be considered as the most comprehensive collection of proverbs in our country. There is a limited number of works like this in existence. She spent a lifetime collecting pieces of folk literature that reveal our ancestors„ wisdom. When she gathered proverbs from various areas in our country, she declared that our elders lived by simple, yet very meaningful rules of righteous living. In fact, she asserted that even the Spaniards who colonized our country noticed how proverbs formed part of the native spirit. Spanish missionaries were found to have translated such proverbs and other oral expressions in Spanish in order for their fellow religious people to learn our indigenous languages. By doing so, they were able to interact with the early Filipinos their and eventually introduce the Catholic faith. Proverbs are brief instructive expressions that suggest a specific action, behavior, or judgment. Referred to by some scholars as ―the wisdom of many and the wit of one‖, they are commonly written in the form of short assertions or poetic two-liners which have rhyme. It is interesting to note that people are easily struck by proverbs when they are woven in conversations or writings. This is perhaps because they have the power to teach people the more essential truths about life and the complexity of living. Compared to lengthy narrations, descriptions, or argumentations, proverbs are able to effect quickly a change in view or disposition. In Filipino, proverbs are called salawikain or sawikain. They prescribe norms, impart a lesson, or emphasize traditions and beliefs in a community. In the anthology of Damiana L. Eugenio, she classified proverbs into six categories: (1) proverbs expressing a general attitude towards life and the laws that govern life; (2) ethical proverbs recommending certain virtues and condemning certain vices; (3) proverbs expressing a system of values; (4) proverbs expressing general truths and observations about life and human nature; (5) humorous proverbs and (6) miscellaneous proverbs. Below are examples of each category. 1. Proverbs expressing a general attitude towards life and the laws that govern life Walang ligaya sa lupa na di dinilig ng luha. (Tagalog) There is no earthly joy that is not watered with tears. Say liket ban-bantayey ermen. (Pangasinan) Joy is always guarded by sorrow. Ang kapalaran ko di ko man hanapin, dudulog lalapit kung talagang akin. (Tagalog) The good fortune which is intended for me will come even without my seeking it. 2. Ako kanhi cabalyero nga wala‟y kabilinggan; pagdawat sa matrimonio, sa hinanali ng lawas mingniwang. (Ivatan) It is better to go home and weave a net than to stay on the shore and watch the fish. Dica agcapcapoy no bassit ti inapoy; dica agnengnengneng no bassit ti diningdeng. (Ilokano) Don„t be too slow if there„s only a little rice; don„t be too shy if there„s only a little viand. Our proverbs are not only witty expressions. They are also our cultural treasures. As we continue to use them in various spoken or written forms and as we explore ways of representing them in graphic, musical, or dramatic modes, we facilitate their preservation. And through these, we strengthen our identity as a people. Damiana Ligon Eugenio (September 27, 1921 – October 10, 2014) was a Filipino female author and professor who was known as the Mother of Philippine Folklore, a title she received in 1986. Apart from teaching at the University of the Philippines, she has several publications in the field of Philippine folklore, among them a series of seven books which she compiled and edited. Eugenio died on October 10, 2014. She had a bad fall in December 2013 and became bed ridden since. Since riddles have been passed from one generation to another, their origins are difficult to trace. This kind of folk literature is used not only to entertain but also to showcase the Filipino wit and intellect. Philippine riddles can either be prose or verse. They are usually written in couplets. Like riddles, they are handed from one generation to another. It is quite difficult to trace their roots since they were originally in oral form. They are culled from the wisdom of daily living, providing lessons and observations about life. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 Perhaps, subject-verb agreement represents the heart of grammar. It is the most basic rule of sentence construction. Here, we will look at some of the basic rules which you have to remember. (In the following examples, the agreeing subject is in bold and the verb is in italics.) 1. Subjects and verbs must agree in number. This is the cornerstone rule that forms the background of the concept. The dog growls when he is angry. The dogs growl when they are angry. 2. Subordinate clauses that come between the subject and verb don't affect their agreement. The dog, who is chewing on my jeans, is usually very good. 3. Prepositional phrases between the subject and verb usually do not affect agreement. The colors of the rainbow are beautiful. 4. When sentences start with "there" or "here," the subject will always be placed after the verb. Some care needs to be taken to identify each part correctly. There is a problem with the balance sheet. Here are the papers you requested. 5. Subjects don't always come before verbs in questions. Make sure you accurately identify the subject before deciding on the proper verb form to use. Where are the pieces of this puzzle? 6. If two subjects are joined by "and," they typically require a plural verb form. The cow and the pig are jumping over the moon. 7. The verb is singular if the two subjects separated by "and" refer to the same person or thing as a whole. Red beans and rice is my mom's favorite dish. 8. If one of the words "each," "every," or "no" comes before the subject, the verb is singular. No smoking or drinking is allowed. Every man and woman is required to check in. 9. If the subjects are both singular and are connected by the words "or," "nor," "neither/nor," "either/or," or "not only/but also," the verb is singular. Either Jessica or Christian is to blame for the accident. ENGLISH 7| LEARNING MODULE 7 QUARTER 1 Page 21 ST. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 10. The only time the object of the preposition decides plural or singular verb forms is when noun and pronoun subjects like "some," "half," "none," "more," or "all" are followed by a prepositional phrase. Then the object of the preposition determines the form of the verb. All of the chicken is gone. All of the chickens are gone. 11. The singular verb form is usually reserved for units of measurement or time. Four quarts of oil was required to get the car running. 12. If the subjects are both plural and are connected by the words "or," "nor," "neither/nor," "either/or," or "not only/but also," the verb is plural. Not only dogs but also cats are available at the animal shelter. 13. If one subject is singular and the other is plural, and the words are connected by the words "or," "nor," "neither/nor," "either/or," or "not only/but also," use the verb form of the subject that is nearest the verb. Either the bears or the lion has escaped from the zoo. Neither the lion nor the bears have escaped from the zoo. 14. Indefinite pronouns typically take singular verbs (with some exceptions). Everybody wants to be loved. 15. The exceptions to the above rule include the pronouns "few," "many," "several," "both," "all," and "some." These always take the plural form. Few were left alive after the flood. 16. If two infinitives are separated by "and," they take the plural form of the verb. To walk and to chew gum require great skill. 17. When gerunds are used as the subject of a sentence, they take the singular form of the verb. However, when they are linked by "and," they take the plural form. Standing in the water was a bad idea. Swimming in the ocean and playing drums are my hobbies. 18. A collective noun, such as "team" or "staff," can be either singular or plural depending upon the rest of the sentence. Typically, they take the singular form, as the collective noun is treated as a cohesive single unit. The herd is stampeding. 19. Titles of books, movies, novels, and other similar works are treated as singular and take a singular verb. The Burbs is a movie starring Tom Hanks. 20. Final rule: Remember, only the subject affects the verb! Nothing else matters. Jacob, who owns sixteen houses, is on his way to becoming a billionaire. Gracefully COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The Sentence Study these items: 1. The moon (what about the moon? Is this a sentence?) 2. The moon loved their children and the sun adored them. (Is this this one sentence or two sentences?) 3. The moon loved their children whom the sun adored. Item number 1 is NOT A COMPLETE SENTENCE. Its meaning is not clear. It does not make sense. To make a complete sentence, we must add a PREDICATE: “The moon loved their children.” Item number 2 contains two sentences. The moon loved their children. (one sentence) The sun adored them. (another sentence) Note that we placed a period after children to signal the end of the first sentence. The word the was capitalized to signal the beginning of the second sentence. Item number 3 is a COMPLETE SENTENCE. It makes sense. Its meaning is clear. A sentence begins with a capital letter. It ends with a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point A sentence must have a SUBJECT and a PREDICATE. This subject and predicate are either expressed or understood. Take note of this sentence. The wife spoke. Wife – it is the person talked about in the sentence. What word expresses an action in relation to the subject? spoke – the predicate in the sentence. ENGLISH 7| LEARNING MODULE 7 QUARTER 1 Page 30 ST. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 Study these sentences… S To complete thought, a sentence must have a subject and a predicate. The SUBJECT is that part of the sentence about which something is said. The PREDICATE is that part of the sentence that says something about the subject. P 1. The SUN ROSE. 2. The MOON SET. 3. The STARS SHONE. In sentence 1, the “sun” is the subject; it is the doer of the action. “Rose” is the predicate; it states what action is performed. In sentence 2, “moon” is the subject; it is the doer of the action. “Set” is the predicate; it states what action is performed. What word is the subject in sentence 3? What is the predicate? A group of words that does not express a complete thought is a sentence fragment. Two sentences written as one form a run-on sentence. Study this sentence carefully, giving special attention to the capitalized words. Only the SUN RODE in the great big sky. The subject SUN is modified by the words only and the. The predicate RODE is modified by IN THE GREAT BIG SKY. SUN and RODE are called headwords. Sun is the headword of the complete subject, only the sun. Rode is the headword of the complete predicate, rode the great big sky. The headword in a subject is a noun or noun substitute; the headword in a predicate is the main verb. In expressions like has made, have done, shall make, and will do, the headwords are made, done, make. Has, have, shall, and will are helping verbs or auxiliary verbs. The simple predicate is made up of the auxiliary verb (if any) plus the main verb. Sometimes an auxiliary verb is used without any other verb. In this case, it is the predicate of the sentence. ACTIVITY 3 Sentence Recognition DIRECTION: Identify each group of words as a sentence (S), a sentence fragment (SF), or a run-on sentence (RS). Circle your answer. 1. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Sentence Frames 1, 2,3, 4, 5 Frame 1: The S-IV Pattern S stands for subject, IV stands for intransitive verb. The intransitive verb asserts something about the subject and does not need an object to complete its meaning. S Example: IV Early Filipinos traded with different nations. Frame 2: The S-TV-O Pattern S stands for subject, TV stands for transitive verb, O stands for object. The object of a verb receives the action indicated by the verb. S Example: TV O Our ancestors possessed engineering skills. Frame 3: The S-LV-C Pattern S stands for subject, LV stands for linking verb, C stands for complement. A linking verb connect the subject to the complement that describes it. The common linking verbs are made up of all the forms of the verbs to be ( is , are, was, were) plus look, feel, taste, sound, smell, seem, appear, get, become, grow, stay, keep, turn, prove, go, remain, resemble, lie, and run. The complement of a linking verb may be a noun or an adjective. It is called a subjective complement. S Examples: LV C Prince Bantugan was a handsome man. (noun complement) S LV C Prince Bantugan was good. (adjective complement) Frame 4: The S-TV-IO-O Pattern S stands for subject, TV stands for transitive verb, IO stands for indirect object, and O stands for direct object. Sometimes the indirect object (IO) is also called inner object and the direct object (O) is the outer object. The indirect object appears after the following verbs: give, make, take, send, mail, hand, tell, lend, read, show, bring, sell, serve, and the like. Your test for the indirect object is that it can be converted into the object of the preposition to or for. S Examples: TV O (obj. of the prep) The ladies gave their love to Prince Bantugan. (Prince Bantugan is the object of the preposition to.) S ENGLISH 7| LEARNING MODULE 7 TV IO QUARTER 1 Page 51 ST. MARY’S ACADEMY OF TALISAYAN Formerly: Mount Carmel School Talisayan, Misamis Oriental S.Y. 2020-2021 The ladies gave Prince Bantugan their love. (Prince Bantugan is the indirect object; the preposition to has been omitted.) Frame 5: The S-TV-O-OC Pattern S stands for subject, TV stands for transitive verb, O stands for direct object and OC for objective complement. The objective complement means the same as the object while the subjective complement means the same as the subject. You can recognize the objective complement by the fact that you can insert to be between the object and the objective complement. The object of the complement may be a noun or an adjective. Examples: S TV O Everyone called Prince Bantugan a good man. (man is a noun used as an objective complement.) Everyone called Prince Bantugan a good. NOTE: Do not confuse the IO with the OC. The IO comes before the object. The OC comes after the object. (good is an adjective used as the objective complement.) ACTIVITY 2 DIRECTION: These sentences follow the S-IV pattern. Indicate the S and the IV. The first one is done for you. S S IV Example: 1. The Malays and Indonesians came in sailboats (balangays). 2. Indians, Arabs, and Chinese traded with our ancestors. 3. Our early civilization advanced greatly. 4. The Chinese influence came directly from China. 5. During these times Filipinos lived well. 6. Then the Spaniards arrived. 7.
