Jordan Romero At 8850 metres, Mount Everest in the Himalayas is the world’s highest mountain. The youngest person to climb it is Jordan Romero from California, who did this when he was only thirteen years old! In Jordan’s school, there was a painting of seven of the world’s highest mountains. One day, a teacher pointed it out and Jordan decided he wanted to climb them. He was so interested in the idea that he talked to his father, who agreed to help him. They began with Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. They got to the top a few weeks before Jordan’s tenth birthday. Four years later, they climbed Everest. First, they spent two months in the Himalayas, getting fitter and preparing for the climb. They also had to learn to live in the cold temperatures there – Jordan found that quite hard. And he missed the rest of his family and his friends back in California, which was particularly difficult for him. Jordan says he knew climbing Everest would be a challenge and he thanked his fantastic team for helping him reach the top. When he got there, he took loads of photos of the amazing views he could see, but not before ringing his mum, as he knew she’d be worried about him. When he got home, Jordan visited schools around the USA, talking to students about climbing. For the moment, he’s planning to work on his website, giving kids advice about keeping fit, eating well and spending time outside. And he definitely intends to climb more mountains before he’s too much older. © UCLES 2022 0837/01/A/M/22 9 26 Jordan first became interested in mountain climbing after A seeing a picture.
