AUGUST 8, 2023 GEOGRAPHY LESSON PLAN LECTURE-ASSESSED LESSON LUKE ADAMS 23788259 Stellenbosch University Geography Lesson (Lecturer-assessed) Grade: 6 Subject: Geography Term/Week: 3/4 Situational analysis: This lesson will be taking place at a public school named De Hoop Primary School. The school is situated in a middle to high-income community in Somerset West. The LoLT is Afrikaans and English. There are six Afrikaans classes and two English classes in each grade. The home language of the learners in the Afrikaans classes is thus Afrikaans, and those in the English classes is thus English. The Classroom sizes are large as there is an average of thirty learners in each class. There is an adequate amount of space in the classroom for the number of learners in each class. The school is very well resourced in every department. De Hoop Primary has great infrastructure and a large number of facilities. It has sport fields, netball courts, tennis courts, a swimming pool, music rooms, and a computer centre that is all in an excellent condition. The school thus offers a wide variety of extramural activities in both the sport and arts & culture sector. Furthermore, there is a variety of teaching resources that are accessible to every teacher and is in great working condition. This includes technology and media such as an overhead projector, computer, and white board. Content area / Topic: Topic: Hot Deserts Content area: Natural vegetation & wildlife in a desert Lesson duration: Resources required: 30 Class size: 31 Platinum Social Sciences textbook, geography workbook, computer, PowerPoint Slideshow. Lesson objective: At the end of this lesson, learners will be able to: • List a minimum of two plants and animals that are found in the desert. • Provide a reason for why there is not a large number of plants that grow in the desert. • Explain how plants are able to survive in the desert. • Explain how various animals are able to survive in the desert. Introduction: 4min • I will quickly summarise the content from the previous lesson, as it links to this one (Hot deserts, its location, and its climate). This will be done via a class discussion. • Thereafter, I will introduce the topic of the lesson as “Natural vegetation & wildlife in a desert”. • A short educational video about natural vegetation & wildlife in deserts will then be played to the learners. Differentiation ideas for groups of learners: • A PowerPoint presentation that contains a video, text, and images is incorporated into the lesson to assist the visual learners in the class by helping them to understand the content in a more comprehensive manner. • Class discussions are also held to ensure that learners are also able to learn from each other, as well as ask the teacher questions. It is also done to assist the auditory learners, so that they are able to have a better understanding of the content.
