OLD BOYS’ VOLUNTEER COACHING POLICY V1.1 2022-02
1.
Purpose
Brisbane Grammar School (School) is committed to supporting volunteer involvement and
understands and appreciates the value and impact of volunteers within the School
community, in particular from former students.
The Old Boys’ volunteer coaching program (Old Boys’ Program) is an excellent opportunity for
former students to give back to the School and the community, whilst also continuing to foster
relationships and engagement with current and former members of the School community.
The School welcomes and encourages former students to become Volunteer Coaches. This
policy sets out the terms of the arrangement.
2.
Scope
This policy applies to Volunteer Coaches within the Old Boys’ Program, being former students of
the School who volunteer to assist with coaching in the School’s sports curriculum.
3.
Volunteer Role
As a Volunteer Coach, you can continue to be involved in the School’s sports curriculum by
contributing your time, on a voluntary basis, to assist the School’s staff and professional
coaches deliver an excellent sporting experience for our students.
Volunteer Coaches are not entitled to payment of any remuneration (e.g. wages, salary or
superannuation). Nor do they accrue any service based entitlements (e.g. annual leave,
personal/carer’s leave or long service leave).
Volunteer Coaches are not employees of or contractors to the School and participation in the
Old Boys’ Program does not constitute an intention to create a legal relationship with the
School.
4.
Time Commitment
There is no minimum or maximum time required by the School to enable you to become a
Volunteer Coach, however you will be required to attend an induction session and familiarise
yourself with the School’s policies and procedures.
5.
Honorarium
As a goodwill gesture for participation in the Old Boys’ Program, the School may decide to award
Volunteer Coaches an “honorarium” at the end of the relevant coaching season.
The honorarium is not a salary, entitlement to wages or payment for services provided, or a
reimbursement of expenses. Rather, it is a token amount given by the School to thank Volunteer
Coaches for their time and commitment.
At present, honorariums awarded by the School to Volunteer Coaches are in the region of $500
to $600, however this is entirely at the School’s discretion.

Safety of our Students
All Volunteer Coaches are required to hold a current Blue Card, unless an exemption
applies. This must remain current throughout the duration of the season.
Volunteer Coaches must provide details of their Blue Card to the School for verification prior to
commencing any coaching or other activity.
Volunteer Coaches must also read and abide by the School’s policies and procedures as
required, including signing the Statement of Commitment to Protecting Children and Young
People.
7.
Standards of Behaviour
All Volunteer Coaches must abide by the Code of Conduct (Staff) and uphold the School’s
core values.
Where the School considers that any Volunteer Coach does not meet the School’s
behaviour standards they will be ask to leave the Old Boys Program.
