OBJECTIVES: by the end of the lesson the students will be able: To provide at least five characteristics of the opinion essay (useful phrases, linking words, sequencing, paragraph plan etc); To recognize an opinion essay; To support a position in a group discussion; To write the scheme for an opinion essay following the paragraph plan. T tells the SS to open the book and read the opinion essay. After that they will have to say if the statements below the text are true or false. The statements contain features of the opinion essay. The T tells the SS that they have to work in pairs. 2. After ten minutes the TT asks the SS to come to the white board one by one and write the true statements on the Anticipated problems and solutions P: SS might not feel motivated to think and answer. The T asks them to copy the characteristics on the notebooks. T clarifies all the questions the SS may have. 1. T writes on the board the paragraph plan but mixes them. (Ex: Introduction – Paragraph 1: give the other side of the argument and reasons etc). The T tells the SS that they gave to work in pairs with their desk mate and rewrite the correct paragraph plan based on the model they have just read and discussed. 2. After five minutes T and SS discuss the paragraph plan. The T makes sure that all the SS have written down the correct plan. 1. T provides the SS with a list of topics and tells them that they have to form a group of four SS and choose a topic. Following the paragraph plan they have to write the main ideas and arguments. They have to assign a spokesman who will come in front of the class and present the plan to the others.
