Modularity- Language is in distinct modules in the mind that are separate from other brain processes. Discretness- Instead of language just being one stream of sound it is divided into units. Constituency- language organizes basic units into constituents to form complex sentence structures. Recursion and Productivity- Recursion allows an infinite amount of rules to be applied and productivity allows the nonfinite number of new sentences that we can understand. Arbitrariness- There is not a direct relationship between a words sound and it’s meaning. Reliance on Context- The interpretation and meaning of words heavily depends on contextual factors. Variability- Language varies in many ways such as dialect, age, the way someone talks in general, etc.
