They say actions speak louder than words. However, words too are as vital as they give sense to a thought. Albeit this, words can also remain futile if they are not appropriately addressed. This is where the essence of communication lies. In a world filled with numerous and conflicting thoughts, it’s aim is to create more open spaces for thoughtful discussions. A young girl, only 16, has been incessantly attacked on Facebook because of an alleged scandal. Even up until this moment, her friends are working extra hard to spread the word about how this is false information and a severe form of cyberbullying. With the heat of this year’s elections, several conspiracy theories concerning the presidential candidates and their families have surfaced online. Trolls attacked a presidential candidate's daughter, accusing her of being involved in a controversy. Meanwhile, due to his choice of words and differing political beliefs, the son of another contender was ridiculed by many netizens. The aforementioned narratives are only some of the many other cases of cyber-bullying and disinformation. With the increased use of the internet and of technological flexibility, there are undoubtedly many negative repercussions of global communication. While its prosperity should be greatly appreciated, its negative consequences should not be disregarded nor be merely frowned upon. The only way to close these gaps in global communication is to improve communication. At the very core of its purpose lies the intention of fostering deeper relationships with one another. With effective communication, we can burn bridges and bring people closer together. In a global scale, communication within government leaders is crucial for the progress of their countries. International negotiations can bolster the economy and can later on improve the lifestyle of the people. Communication within the workplace is also just as vital since a pleasant work atmosphere can permeate into the job that people do. This allows the employees to work more efficiently. There are still many other ways to which communication can be improved. But it has to first start within ourselves. As Seneca would say, “What progress, you ask, have I made? I have begun to be a friend to myself.” Effective communication with oneself, that includes your inner voices and how you look after yourself, will greatly reflect on how you treat the people around you. Building healthy relations with your family and friends are just as important towards gaining self-fulfillment.
