Corruption: Its causes and prevention The world is developing day by day, but there are many issues worldwide that are being an obstacle to the development of the world. One of the main issues that is hindering this development is corruption. So, what is corruption? Corruption is the misuse of the given power for personal gains. Corruption is also being a cause of many other major issues worldwide. It can make a country’s democratic power weak. Corruption hinders a country’s economic growth. Corruption is seen more in countries which have weak governance, weak security, and weak anti-corruption policies. It is seen in organizations that have weak policies, security, and maintenance. It is usually done by higher officials, administrators, and members of the organization/government. There are many forms of corruption; bribery, embezzlement, money laundering, theft, nepotism, under-the-table transactions, fraud, and extortion. Corruption happens due to many factors, such as; greed for desire, higher market and political monopolization, low/weak democracy, and higher levels of bureaucracy etc. People involve themselves in corruption in many ways. Some people pay bribes to others to act in their favor. Officials and administrators in an organization/government may take advantage of their position and power to steal assets and funds from the organization/government. Fraudsters deceive others to secure unfair gains. Some people may take advantage of their power to employ close relatives and family members to a good job or give them advantages unfairly, which is nepotism. Some people may take others' belongings illegally. This is how some people involve themselves in corruption. However, there are ways that can be followed to prevent corruption. The government of a country should enact laws and policies on anti-corruption. Awareness should be spread among the people of a country on anti-corruption. An organization should strengthen their security and privacy to prevent corruption. The government should strengthen their governance, and ensure security by enacting strict laws. This way we can ensure a safe and a corruption-free country, eliminating corruption.
