Technical writing is any writing designed to explain complex, technical, and specialized information to audiences who may or may not be familiar with them. It is typically used in technical and occupational fields like engineering, robotics, computer hardware and software, medicine, finance, and consumer electronics. ◦Consumer-directed technical writing ◦Expert-to-expert technical writing ◦Technical marketing content Technical vs Academic vs Creative Writing What is Academic Writing? Academic writing is the formal writing style used in colleges and universities. It’s what students are expected to produce for classes and what professors and academic researchers use to write scholarly materials. High schools sometimes require academic writing style in certain classes. Technical vs Academic vs Creative Writing What is Creative Writing? Creative writing is written to entertain and educate. We enjoy reading novels and stories, not because they are necessary to read or helpful for us, just because we get a certain pleasure from reading them, the pleasure which can’t be got from reading technical writing. Creativity in writing involves the making of something new or the reinventing of something old. Being creative means causing something unique to come into existence and being original. It’s seeing something in a different way and putting your own special stamp on it. “I have nothing interesting to say.” “I’m afraid of getting a desk reject.” “I cringe to think of what the reviewers will say.” “This isn’t new.” All of those voices come from a place of fear.
