Bautista January 2024 Research Plan Rationale Taking care of yards and lawns is crucial, especially when it comes to making outdoor or public spaces look neat and tidy. This sort of preservation, however, is not limited to removing wastes or garbages as it also includes the necessary task of trimming overgrown grass and controlling the excessive spread of undesirable weeds. Just like wastes and garbages, overgrown grass also contributes poorly to the environment as it deminishes the visual appeal of outdoor spaces and limits the usability of a particular landscape in terms of doing outdoor activities. Other than that, tall grasses also provide shelter for insects and pests, increasing such risks of health problems. The pressence of lawn mowers was then introduced and used as it has been found to be extremely significant in terms on addressing the still ongoing environmental issue. Lawn mowers are crucial for maintaining grassy areas, ensuring even growth and controlling unnecessary weed growth. Maintaining cleanliness, prevent dirtiness, and enhance the appearance of outdoor spaces, thus creates a welcoming and well kept environment (Coxon, 2023). Unfortunately, alongside the aforementioned benefits brought by lawn mowers itself, is also its negative impact to the environment, for a typical lawn mower that is commonly used even up to these days are mostly gas-powered machines which contributed a lot to pollution. According to Jonathan D. Bourdeau, The Momentum Contributing Writer, in his article on How Gas Powered Lawn Mowers Are Bad For The Environment And What To Do About It (n.d.), gas-powered lawn mowers emit significant amounts of pollutants into the air, Although various machines, such as a Solar lawn Mower, have been developed as alternatives, it is however, still found to be incapable of outweighing the performance of a gas powered one for they are not very much operative during cloudy days and that their trimming capacity is also limited especially when it comes to a much larger yards or spaces (Dutta et. al., 2017). Electronic Lawn Mower is also a good alternative for the gas-powered one but still, when it comes to trimming a huge amount of grass, reasons to still prefer the gas powered mower is still highly apprehendable (Mathews, 2022). The researchers then undertook this study aiming to develop an innovative design lawn mower, creating a pedal lawn mower power by four electric motor, as a viable alternative to gas powered mowers, with its performance and mechanism evaluated and tested for efficacy, throughout the study. A quantitative experimental research design and statistical approach, which collects and interprets data, will be used by the researchers to determine the relationship between the independent variable (Pedal lawn mower) and dependent variable (grass) of the study, which will therefore help advance the understanding and application of a manual lawn mower in the context of its effectiveness in trimming grasses. Research Questions This study aims to create an innovative clean energy lawn mower, addressing An enticing and well-kept atmosphere is created by keeping outdoor areas clean, and improving their appearance. Particularly in the province of Siquijor, where gas powered lawn mower are widely used in the community, thus producing greenhouse gas and contributing to the pollution that could possibly harm the environment. Thus the researchers came up with an idea of creating a clean energy lawn mower reducing greenhouse gas emission and promoting cleanliness in the community. The following are the specific issues that will be therefore addressed throughout the study: 1. What measurable improvements does the current sweeper pedaled vehicle show in various settings compared to previously studied models? 2. The accessibility and manageability of the sweeper pedaled vehicle in school campus, considering ease of use, maintenance costs, and user satisfaction through quantifiable surveys? 3. The waste that a sweeper pedaled vehicle collects in a certain amount of time or per area compared to traditional waste disposal and street cleaning methods? 4. What amounts or weights of different waste categories (hard/soft plastics, organics, paper, etc.) can the street sweeper pedaled vehicle collect within a given time period? Goals, Expected outcomes, and Hypothesis General Objectives This research aims to test the feasibility and potential impact of introducing sweeper pedaled vehicles, constructed from old bicycles and waste collection materials, as a sustainable solution for waste disposal and street cleanliness in the Philippines specifically in Siquijor Provincial Science High School, aiming to advance both environmental and economic progress. Specific Objectives 1. Evaluate the effectiveness, accessibility, and manageability of sweeper pedaled vehicles in waste collection, focusing on their role in achieving and maintaining cleaner streets. 2. Investigate the broader implications of adopting sweeper pedaled vehicles, exploring their potential contributions to environmental sustainability, economical progress, and community well-being through improved waste disposal practices and the promotion of increased physical activity within communities. Hypothesis In this study, the researchers will make a lawn mower bike out of old bicycles and other parts of a lawn mower for cutting the grasses on the field. The following hypotheses are then proposed by the researchers: The implementation of a lawn mower bike significantly contributes to environmental sustainability, improving the cleanliness and the beauty of the environment. The lawn mower bike is practical and feasible enough to be useful and beneficial for environmental sustainability. The lawn mower bike is accessible thus, manageable enough to contribute environmental to communities. The lawn mower bike might be that the bike will effectively mow the lawn while being ridden. Null Hypothesis The lawn mower bike gives no significant difference in the lawn mowing efficiency between a traditional lawn mower. The implementation of lawn mower bikes does not significantly contribute to environmental sustainability. Lawn mower bikes lack practicality and feasibility for generating environmental furtherance . Procedures and Experimental Design The research process involves several steps which initially includes sourcing an bicycle to serve as the foundational structure for the lawn mower, then subsequently fabrication of a compartment where the three 12V motor with a 200mm x 30mm blade is attach in parallel alignment in order to achieve its efficacy. The compartment will be mounted on front fork of the bike. Other materials such small wheels, 48v Li-ion battery and speed controller. Using these materials, the researchers will assemble the pedal lawn mower. Upon completion, the mower will undergo testing to assess its efficacy in cutting and trimming grasses. This study will employ an experimental design, considering the pedal lawn mower as the dependent variable and the grass as the independent variable. Risks and Precautions In adherence to safety standards, the researchers prioritize incorporating safety features like strong braking systems and ensuring sturdy construction to mitigate potential accidents or injuries in their project. Throughout the construction phase, precise safety precautions will be observed, including the appropriate utilization of safety gear, ethical handling of materials, and careful adherence to safety protocols during the implementation of procedures. This comprehensive approach aims to uphold safety measures from both structural and procedural standpoints throughout the project's establishment. Data Analysis The data analysis will be concluded through the use of quantitative methods in interpreting the collected data. Statistical analysis will also be use to define the numerical data that were collected during the product testing of the pedal mower vehicle. The quantity of grass that had been cut and collected, and the area that had been covered throughout one trial will be the main basis for an efficient pedal mower vehicle.
