The Lucky Ring
In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo finds luck when the ring slips on his finger at the
right moment. He stumbles upon Gollum, a goblin, who says if he can answer all his riddles,
Bilbo may pass. Luck reveals itself when the text reads, “The ring felt very cold as it quietly
slipped on to his groping forefinger” (Tolkien 83). In the quote, it states how it all happens,
without him noticing. Bilbo seems confused, but later realizes that the ring
slipped on his finger. It is pure luck how it flew onto his finger. Furthermore, he benefits
from that ring as he can sneak around. “…Bilbo stepping down into the middle of
them, and slipping off the ring” (Tolkien 93). Lastly, the luck Bilbo has with the ring
benefits him in many other ways.
