Gabriella Awad Awad Mrs. Simms Literature and Composition 11 September 2023 The Lucky Ring In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo finds luck when the ring slips on his finger at the right moment. He stumbles upon Gollum, a goblin, who says if he can answer all his riddles, Bilbo may pass. Luck reveals itself when the text reads, “The ring felt very cold as it quietly slipped on to his groping forefinger” (Tolkien 83). In the quote, it states how it all happens, without him noticing. Bilbo seems confused, but later realizes that the ring slipped on his finger. It is pure luck how it flew onto his finger. Furthermore, he benefits from that ring as he can sneak around. “…Bilbo stepping down into the middle of them, and slipping off the ring” (Tolkien 93).
