PREPOSITIONS
Prepositions are words that show us the relationships between other words in a
sentence.
❖ A preposition of time tells us when the action of the verb happened or will happen.
Some examples of prepositions of time are in, on, at and during.
For example:
 School begins in January. (We use the preposition in for months and years.)
 My birthday is on 21 July. (We use the preposition on for days and dates.)
 The movie starts at 7:45 p.m. (We use the preposition at for time.)
 Nandi ate her apple during lunch break. (We use the preposition during for times that go
on for a while.)
❖ Prepositions of position show us where something is in relation to something else.
Some examples of prepositions of position are in, on, under, above, next to and
behind.
For example:
 The dog slept in the kennel. (The preposition links the dog with the kennel.)
❖ Prepositions of direction show direction and tell us more about the action of a
verb. Some examples of prepositions of direction are to, towards, through, next to,
behind and around.
For example:
 Thulani drives towards the church. (The preposition links Thulani with the church and tells
us more about the verb drives.
