What is It
Selected Arts and Crafts of MIMAROPA
Designated as Region IV-B by Executive Order No. 103 on May 17, 2002.
MIMAROPA is the acronym of the 5 provinces that comprise the region. These are
Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marindueque, Romblon, and Palawan.
Known to be the home of numerous indigenous people. Each has their own way
of expressing their unique culture and tradition, and these are very evident in the
arts and crafts rooted in each community. Let’s take a look and discover some of
the well-known art works from this region.
Mindoro
Ambahan in Hanunuo Scripture
There are eight ethnolinguistic groups living in Mindoro,
commonly they called themselves Mangyans. One of these
groups
is
the
Hanunuo
Mangyans,
which
means
“truly/real/genuine”. Script was carved either into a fresh leaf
or into the internode of a bamboo. Traditionally this was how
communication between groups were done in the early years.
Moreover, script was also used to write poetic expressions with
seven syllables known as Ambahan. It is delivered through
chanting without a determined musical pitch.
Marinduque
Morion Mask
People of the Island of Marinduque have a unique Lenten
tradition done every Holy Week called Moriones Festival. During
the festivity, participants wear colorful capes, vests, capes,
wooden shields and Motion masks to act as Roman soldiers.
These masks are made of wood or paper-mâché decorated with
animal hairs, crepe papers, shells and tassels.

Palawan
Manunggul Jar
A well-kept cultural treasure found in Manunggul Cave at
Lipuun Point, Palawan in the early 1960s. A secondary burial
jar that reflects the traditional beliefs of early Filipinos in life
after death. Artistic expression is very evident in its deeply
engraved curvilinear scroll designs painted with natural iron
or hematite. Carvings of a boat and two human figures on top
of the jar cover represents two souls on a journey to the
afterlife.
Tagbanua Carvings
Tagbanua are said to be one of the oldest dwellers in the
Philippines and are regarded to be associated with the Tabon
Man. Wood Carvings that reflect their strong belief in the
world of life and death are utilized during rituals. They also
make toys for children. The soft wood as the main material
is blackened with soot and carve with simple patterns to
reveal the original white color of the wood.
Selected Arts and Crafts of Visayas Group of Island
One of the three principal islands of the Philippines is the Visayas. It consists
of three regions, these are Region VI (Western Visayas), Region VII (Central
Visayas), and Region VIII (Eastern Visayas). Each has captivating tourist spots to
offer, such as the Boracay Island which is known to be one of the most beautiful
beaches in the world.
Surrounded by the abundance of nature, people living in each place learned to
maximize available raw indigenous materials into notable works of art.
Iloilo
Patadyong
Iloilo was referred to as the “Textile Capital of the
Philippines” in the early 19th century. Patadyong is an
established major portion of weaving industry in the
province. Materials used to form this piece of cloth are
cotton and abaca. Distinguished by its lines with different
width that cross each other to form a geometric design of
different colors. Can be worn by women as a skirt paired
with kimono. It also utilizes as tapis, carriage for babies,
cover from the sun or rain just to name a few.

Negros Island
Sinamay
A textile traditionally made from fibers of leafstalk
of abaca plant and indigenous plant similar to banana
known as sinamay. Sinamay fiber is non resistant to
pigments that is why it is suited for making attractive
baskets, hats and ribbons. A world-class textile
industry from Valencia, Negros Oriental.
Capiz
Capiz Shells
An edible mollusk abundant in the Province of
Capiz. Before these shells are formed into craft
products it undergoes several stages of treatment such
as soaking to soften the shell, drying, bleaching, and
pressing.
Basey, Samar
Basey Mat Weaving
Made of dried tikog, a knee-high reed grass which
thrives in swampy areas along rice fields. To keep the
plant moist and flexible mats are woven inside a cave
mostly by women. Colorful banigs have a higher price
compared to a simple one. These days, locals are also
creating bags, decors, and placemats.
