Chapter 1
Problem and Its Background
Background of the Study
Scented candles have long been admired for their ability to create a soothing ambiance
through gentle illumination and pleasant aromas. In addition to these traditional uses, there has
been a growing interest in enhancing the functionality of candles by incorporating elements such
as mosquito repellency António B. Mapossa, Walter W. Focke, et al (2021).This study focuses
on the utilization of marigold as a multifunctional source in scented candles, combining
illumination and mosquito repellency.
Marigold flowers (Tagetes.) are not only prized for their vibrant colors and distinct scent
but are also known for their natural insect-repelling properties. Marigolds contain compounds,
such as pyrethrin, that have been used historically as natural insecticides PLoS One (2020).
Integrating marigold into scented candles not only adds an appealing fragrance but also offers

the potential for mosquito repellency, making them a versatile choice for outdoor and indoor
settings.
This study aims to investigate the feasibility and benefits of marigold-scented candles
with dual functionality, including illumination and mosquito repellency. The study will address the
following key aspects: Effectiveness, Scent, Acceptability, and Life span.
This study seeks to contribute to the evolving field of multifunctional candles by exploring
the unique combination of marigold's aromatic and insect-repelling properties. By doing so, it
aims to provide consumers with a practical and eco-friendly solution for both illumination and
protection against mosquitoes, particularly in outdoor settings where these dual functionalities
can be most valuable. Additionally, it addresses the broader context of sustainability and
consumer preferences for products that serve multiple purposes.

Generally, this study aims to determine the acceptability of Marigold-Infused, Natural, and EcoFriendly Scented Candle for Illumination and Mosquito Eradication. Specifically, the study
attempts to answer the following questions.
1. What is the level of acceptability of marigold extract, considering the utilization of marigold
flowers as the primary component in the production in terms to:
a. Scent
b. Life Span
c. Effectiveness
d. Acceptability
2. Is there a significant relationship between the use of marigold flower extract in the production
of scented candles in terms of Scent, Life Span, Effectiveness and Acceptability with the
different treatments:
a. a. 50% Marigold Flower Extract, 50% Soy Wax
b. 30% Soy Wax, 70% Marigold Flower Extract
c. 70% Marigold Flower Extract, 30% Soy Wax
3. Is there a significant difference between the treatments of scented candles infused with
marigold flower extract in terms of variations in Scent, Life Span, Effectiveness, and
Acceptability?

Research Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis:
There is no significant relationship between the mixture of the cardboard and the components in
the production of cardboard.
Alternative Hypothesis:
There is significant relationship between the mixture of the cardboard and the components in
the production of cardboard.
Scope and Delimitation
This study aims to create an eco-friendly mosquito repellent using the marigold plant as
the primary ingredient. The research will focus on formulating, assessing the efficacy, safety,
and acceptability of a marigold-infused scented candle, which will serve as both a mosquito
repellent and a source of illumination. Additionally, it will involve a comparative analysis of the
marigold-infused scented candle against existing synthetic mosquito repellents in terms of cost,
performance, and environmental impact.
This research will exclusively use for sourcing essential oil in the scented candle. It will
not consider other marigold species or alternative mosquito-repelling plants. The study will
concentrate solely on the repellent properties of the scented candle against mosquitoes and will
not assess its effectiveness against other insects or arthropods. Testing will occur in controlled
laboratory and indoor settings, omitting outdoor or field conditions. The evaluation will involve a

limited number of human volunteers and mosquitoes. Long-term effects and potential side
effects on human health and the environment will not be investigated.
Significance of the Study
The result of this study will benefit the following:
Students- this study will help the students enhance their knowledge on making innovative
scented candles.
Parents- to inform the parents regarding the proper usage of insecticides, and to encourage
them to use natural insecticides to protect and children from toxic insecticides.
Consumers- it will give them knowledge that Marigold - Infused Candles can be used as
insecticide which is very affordable and effective to use.
Future Researchers- the outcome of the study may motivate the future reseachers on making
this study become wider and successful in making their own research.
Definition of Terms
Eradication is the process of getting rid of something completely or of destroying something
bad:
Feasibility is the state or degree of being easily or conveniently done.

or principles.
Marigold is a plant of the daisy family, typically with yellow, orange, or copper-brown flowers,
that is widely cultivated as an ornamental.
Multifunctional means having or fulfilling several functions.
Repellent is a substance that deters insects or other pests from approaching or settling.

Review of Related Literature
The uses of plant extract which is Marigold flower can reduce the uses of chemical in
mosquito repellent. Thus a research will be conducted to study on extraction kinetics and
formulation of natural mosquito repellent solution using ultrasonic extraction from Marigold
flower. According to P. Mishra and, S. Shakya (2023)...even though synthetic chemicals are still
used as insect repellents more often than essential oils, these natural products have the
potential to offer effective and safer insect repellents for both people and the environment.
Another related research about the usage of marigold as mosuito repellent is the findings by R.
Aji and, J. Kristianto (2023) The results of the Chi-square analysis obtained P= 0.04< α 0.05,
statistically there was a significant positive effect between marigold leaf slices on mosquito
repellent, with odds ratio= 4.10 times. In order for students to get used to it, put slices of
marigold leaves in the room to repel mosquitoes. Tagetes can show a remarkable biochemical
interaction known as allelopathy by producing a potentially bioactive component α-therthienyl
that is mainly responsible for nematicidal action.
(L. Bakshi and R. Ghosh (2023).
To address this growing problem, the Philippine government established the National
Dengue Prevention and Control Program in 1993.3,4 The program consists of case and vector
surveillance, case diagnosis and management, integrated vector management, outbreak
response, health promotion and advocacy, and research.

In the present study, the conditions have been optimised for application of natural dye extracted
from waste marigold (Tagetes erecta) flowers on Juco (jute-cotton blended) fabric. The flowers
were collected from temples and florists. A nonconventional method of dyeing has also been
explored such as contact dyeing. Extraction of dye was carried out in aqueous medium at three
pH levels (acidic, alkaline and neutral). Effect of pre-mordanting and post-mordanting with
natural mordants such as alum, eucalyptus, harda, iron filings plus jaggery, pomegranate peel
and supari were studied. The range of colours obtained varied from bright yellow to dark green,
browns, bluish grey and red. The dyed samples were analysed for their colour values in terms of
K/S and L*c*h* value and assessed for fastness properties such as wash, rub and light fastness
as per the ISO and ASTM standards. For testing mosquito repellence activity, standardized
Cage test was used. Cone bioassays test method was used for the evaluation of the toxicity of
the dye.
The dye was found to be non- toxic but can repel mosquitoes by its smell. (Dr. Sheetal Chopra,
Ms. Anshi Rastogi and Ms. Akshita Agrawal 2020)

Methodology
Research Design
This study will use experimental research design to collect and gather data. By
conducting experiments on the environment and insects, specifically mosquitoes. This research
hopes to show the efficacy of marigold scented candles as mosquito repellent.
Sampling Procedure and Sample
Population refers to individuals or objects that are the focus of the study. The researchers
choose a sample of thirty (30) youth to participate in the study.
The sample of this study was selected through non-random sampling. Non-probability sampling
is a method of selecting units from a population using a subjective (i.e. non-random) method.
Since non-probability sampling does not require a complete survey frame, it is a fast, easy and
inexpensive way of obtaining data. (Statistique Canada, 2021)
