Glue Gun. Glue guns are very useful tools but they need to be used with extreme caution. The nozzle of the glue gun and the hot glue can both reach temperatures as high as 195 degrees Celsius. This can cause serious burns instantly upon contact. Students must be wearing safety glasses or goggles when using glue guns. All students must be dressed safely (no jewelry or open-toed shoes; hair tied back) when using a glue gun. A First-aid kit must be easily accessible. There must be a bucket or sink of cold water ready, to cool any burns. A designated area for using glue guns should be set-up in the classroom. To prevent students from tripping over cords and yanking glue guns off the table, a table or counter should be placed up against a wall with an electrical source available from the wall side. The counter or table must be covered to prevent damage to the surface. When gluing or reloading, glue gun nozzles must be pointed down and towards the wall. Glue sticks are kept by the teacher and given to students as required. Students should NEVER use their fingers to spread the glue. Spreader sticks are used to spread hot glue. Popsicle sticks work well as spreader sticks. January 2018
