PERFORMANCE TASK No, ____
2023 SCIENCE FILM FESTIVAL – REFLECTION
GRADE 9
Title of Film: "The Living Sea"
PART A: Read carefully and answer each film review question.
1. How well did "The Living Sea" convey its theme, and what impact do you think it had in
promoting understanding and appreciation for scientific concepts related to the film?
Answer: "The Living Sea" video has conveyed the theme about preserving coral reefs comprehensively
because the camera is in first-person POV setup so it seems that we audience are having a firsthand
experience with the sea. The interview clips included are also informative, and are effective in explaining
why there is a need to study and restore coral reefs, so there is a lasting impact on anyone who will watch
the video.
2. What scientific concepts did you learn from "The Living Sea," and how effectively did the
film present this information in an understandable and interesting way?
Answer: I gained various scientific concepts from "The Living Sea. I learned that corals are chimeras, which
are mixtures of different organisms. Coral reefs are basically the engineers of the marine realm according
to the video, and are underwater cities that lots of other organisms come to inhabit. They are animals
themselves, have clear transparent skin, and are unique because they partner with algae that can get food
from the sun through photosynthesis.
Furthermore, coral bleaching happens when the symbiotic algae that lives inside the coral polyp and
provides the coral with nutrients and food, is secreted by the coral when the water is warm due to global
warming. As a result, only the dead skeleton is left and it’s white so it was called coral bleaching. The film
presented these information in an understandable and interesting way by showing videos of coral reefs
under the sea, together with interview clips by people involved in the coral reef restoration movement.
3. In your opinion, how well does "The Living Sea" relate to your age group? Do you feel it
struck a balance between being entertaining and educational for you?
Answer: “The Living Sea" relates to my age group really well because the video discusses movements
undertaken by the youth, in order to spread awareness about the coral reefs and initiate movement to each
and everyone about preserving the corals. It certainly struck a balance between being entertaining and
educational for me because I can see that the youths are really the one involved in the video; they are the
one narrating and are being interviewed as well.
4. Did "The Living Sea" inspire you to take any actions or think differently about the scientific
themes it presented?
Answer: Yes the video definitely inspired me to also take actions about the scientific themes it presented.
Knowing that there are different programs and hands-on activities that young people do to take care of
corals which involves micro fragmentation, replanting, DNA analysis, a robot that has implanted Artificial
Intelligence (AI), as well as paintings, collages, puppets and animation films, inspired me to also learn
about coral reefs myself, and keep myself informed on how to reduce me and my family’s carbon footprint
to help with improving coral preservation.
5. How accurately do you think the film depicted scientific aspects related to its themes, and
did it effectively convey the impact of these concepts on the environment?
Answer: The film is accurate in depicting the scientific aspects related to its themes because the film was
shooted in a real location, and credible people from trusted organizations are interviewed. The scientific
aspects mentioned are very effective in conveying the impact of these concepts on the environment
6. Were the topics covered in the film relatable to you, and do you think they effectively
conveyed the environmental message of the film?
Answer: Yes, the topics covered in the film are relatable to me because I am currently experiencing the
effects of global warming, which is the threat being faced by the corals. I am aware of the coral reef
diversity in Philippine seas, so it hurts to know that by 2050 there won’t be corals already as stated in the
video. So, this information really encouraged me to support the coral restoration movement.
7. Reflecting on your experience, what do you think is the potential impact of the film on you
and your awareness of environmental issues?
Answer: The potential impact of the film on me is that it made me more mindful of the lifestyle habits that I
do that may pollute the waters and leave many carbon footprint, thus contributing to global warming which
is the reason for coral bleaching. My awareness of environmental issues, especially in the marine life is
heightened, and that’s why I wholeheartedly support the youth movement of preserving the living sea.
PART B: General Evaluation (Comments and Suggestions)
My general comments about the video is that it was informative overall. It first introduced the
coral reefs’ characteristics and descriptions, then moved on to discussing the problems being
faced by these coral reefs. The programs being undertaken to combat coral reef endangerment
are then discussed and these concepts are effectively conveyed through an orderly
arrangement of interview clips and videos showing the colorful marine life and one of a kind
corals. I wish to watch more videos like this in the future because they teach me a lot of concepts,
and they also help me become a better person who takes care and show concern of the nature,
even as a youth.
