MODULE IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 1
OBJECTIVE: Defines information needs, locates, accesses, assesses, organizes, and communicates
information. (MIL11/12IL-IIIc-8); Explains elements of information.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
Information, media and technology skills are one of those skills that a 21 st century learner
like you have to develop as you prepare yourself to thread the paths towards further education,
business or employment.
In the previous lesson, you were familiarized with key concepts in media and information
literacy. Today’s topic is on information literacy. Writer, Uzuegbu (2014) gathered different
perspectives on the term:
The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) of the American Library
Association defined information literacy as “a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize
when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the
needed information.”
A similar idea is expressed by the Chattered Institute of Library and Information
Practitioners (CILIP) UK which states it is “knowing when and why information is needed,
where to find it, and how to evaluate , use and communicate it in an ethical manner.”
From Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy Institute (ANZIL), information
literacy is “a prerequisite for participative citizenship, for social inclusion, for the creation of
new knowledge, for personal, vocational, corporate and organizational empowerment, as well as
learning for life.”
While these international organizations have provided clarification for the term, Campos
(2016) points out the ultimate goal of information literacy and that is “not simply to gain more
information but to gain the wisdom essential for making life worth-living.” Clearly, information
literacy is beneficial not only to an individual but to society as well.

Knowledge is power! This popular adage may be interpreted as knowledge being a means or
tool to empower an individual like you to make decisions in life, solve problems you encounter or
create positive change in your society.
Information is associated with data and knowledge. Interestingly, the data-informationknowledge-wisdom hierarchy from the Dutch KIT Institute (Campos, 2016) not only provides a better
association and order of these key ideas but also targets the essence of information literacy.

To illustrate more the point, take a look at the items below. What do you see in item no. 1? How
about in item no. 2? How were the data or numbers in item no. 1 transformed in item no. 2? What can you
infer about the covid-19 cases in selected municipalities in Metro Manila as presented in the infograph?
What do you think is the implication of the results of this statistics? How would make use of this new
knowledge that you gained?
Knowing that your community or a nearby community has cases of covid-19, for example, won’t
you be more concerned about going out of your house and just be one with the campaign - #StayHome
#StaySafe?

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?
After presenting you the lesson on information literacy, what do you think are the
essential characteristics of an information literate individual? How important it is to be an information
literate student?
PRACTICE EXERCISES 1:
According to PAGASA, our weather bureau, wet season in the Philippines starts in June. When
there are typhoons, classes are suspended in areas concerned. If your area experiences heavy rains and
floods, where you search for important announcements? Do your typical sources always give you accurate
information?

Today’s activity will allow you to learn more about information literacy. According to Andres et
al. (2016) there are stages or elements that make up information literacy. These Stages/ Elements of
Information Literacy are:
1. Identifying/
Recognizing information
needs
2. Determining sources
of information
7. Creating and
communicating new
knowledge
3. Citing or searching for
information
6. Using information in an
ethical, efficient and
effective way
4. Analyzing and
evaluating the quality of
information
5. Organizing, storing or
archiving information
DIRECTIONS: After having read the elements or stages of information literacy, answer the questions below
based on the scenario given. These are essential questions that refer to the stages or elements of information. Answer
in complete sentence observing correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Imagine this scenario:
Your municipality is experiencing heavy rains and flood; and yet, there is no typhoon signal from
PAGASA. Your school is seven kilometers away from your home and it would take you two rides to get
there. What are you going to do?
1. What information do you need?
2. Where will you get the information?
3. How will you access the information?
4. How will you check the quality of the information?
5. How will you organize the information so that it will be clear?
6. How will you use the information that you have?
7. How will you communicate the information?
8-10. After familiarizing yourself with the elements of information, what do you think about the importance of it?
PRACTICE EXERCISES 2:
The invention of the internet has made accessing and communicating information
within reach. There are platforms that offer vast knowledge at your fingertips. However, there are also
some downsides like the presence of internet trolls, fake news, untrustworthy websites to name a few. As
a student, whether you are using the internet or not, information literacy is important to exercise.
DIRECTIONS: Interview briefly five older individuals in your home or community to find out which
media providers they often use in searching for information for their particular tasks. Allow them to rate
the media providers below using the scale 1-5, 1 being the highest. Ask them to give their reasons for their
choices. Afterwards, tally the results and present them in a simple table or matrix. Below the table, write
the results in a paragraph form highlighting the highest and lowest ranks and the reasons for the choices.
Observe correct grammar, spelling and punctuation and remember to show respect and tact during the
conduct of the interview.

MODULE IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 2
OBJECTIVE:
Demonstrates ethical use of information. (MIL11/12IL-IIIc-9)
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
In this age of information, students in particular need not go to the library to borrow
books to do their assignments and researches. With their gadgets and internet connection, they can just
“google” the information that they need at the convenience of their homes. As previously mentioned, the
internet has paved the way for an easier access and sharing of information. But just like other inventions,
there are disadvantages when they are not put into good use.
With the vast information that can be searched on the net, anybody may be tempted to just “copy
and paste” exactly what another author has written. This strikes a serious concern for all of us.
In the film The Glass House in 2001, Ruby, one of the main characters, was expelled in school for
submitting a plagiarized essay. In reality, there were news agencies that reported alleged plagiarism
offenses in the past of famous local political and business personalities who were placed under scrutiny
at the time. What then is plagiarism? How do we avoid it?
According to Andres et al. (2016) plagiarism is “using other people’s words and ideas without
clearly acknowledging the source of information.” For Campos (2016), it is “a serious ethical breach, and
it is like stealing.” It may be committed accidentally or intentionally according to Dakota State University
but the consequences are the same.
For an individual to observe the ethical use of information, he or she must cite references
correctly when borrowing ideas or work of another writer even when paraphrasing and summarizing texts;
and when using quotations.

Plagiarism is getting information or using images, illustrations or photos from the owner and
taking it as your own. To avoid this, in research, for example, you need to do citation. In referencing,
citation would includes the author of the book, for example; the date of publication; the title of the book,
place of publication; and publication company.
In the news articles about the UP student and Manuel V. Pangilinan, how was plagiarism
committed? What were the consequences of their actions? Is plagiarism a serious matter? What new
learning did you get about ethical use of information? In what other ways can you use information
ethically besides avoiding plagiarism?
When doing researches, you can do paraphrasing or borrowing another writer’s idea or statement
but rephrasing or stating it in your own words without changing the meaning. You can also do
summarizing or making a text short or shorter to make it more understandable like in paraphrasing
without loosing the meaning. Another is quoting or borrowing another writer’s idea or statement using
quotations. These strategies still require citations.
You can visit the link https://owl.purdue.edu to learn more about citations.
ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?
As a student, why is it important to understand the ethical use of information?

MODULE IN MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 3
OBJECTIVE:
Editorializes on the importance of proper sourcing of data.
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:
It was discussed previously that citation is important as it means giving credit to the author
and letting your readers know where you found an information. Even when you paraphrase and
summarize, you still need to cite your source. Changing a few words of an author doesn’t make a work a
paraphrased version. Even when quoting his or her statements, there is still a need for citation. Plagiarism
may be committed with or without sources cited.
Writing happens to be one of the most challenging tasks most students like you would tackle.
Whether it is writing an essay or a longer version like a research paper, it would take you a good amount
of patience in searching for information from the right source or reference in order to learn more about
your topic. This brings us to today’s topic which is the importance of proper sourcing of data. A
source of data means the origin of the data being used.
As a student, you tend to maximize the use of Google and Yahoo to search for information for
your particular school tasks. With this, evaluating the quality of information is important.
Campos (2016) enumerates some criteria when evaluating information. These are relevance of
information; nature of source like business, education or news agency, for example; style which is about
the language used and the format like journal or editorial type etc.; scope and depth of information;
timeliness of information; authority or the person responsible for the information; and lastly,
documentation, corroboration and observation or checking if information is properly cited and and its
sources are checked and verified.
Aside from these criteria, it is also important to understand proper sourcing of data and
differentiating primary sources from secondary sources. These factors contribute to your paper.
Without proper sources, your paper will end up as mere opinion - no evidences to support your opinions.

After watching the videos, what do you think of primary and secondary sources? Why are speeches
considered as primary sources? Aside from books, what are considered as secondary sources? What is the
difference between scholarly and popular sources? What would happen if, for example, your research
paper has neither primary nor secondary sources?

According to McQuade Library (2020), primary sources data are original writings on which other
researches are based. Examples of these are speeches, diaries, autobiographies, and interviews. While
secondary sources are those that analyze primary sources. Such examples are reference materials like
textbooks, articles, biographies etc.
On the other hand, scholarly sources are intended for academic in-depth researches like books
and journal articles written by experts while popular sources are those for general readers and are for
entertainment, and sharing of opinion like magazines and newspapers (USC Libraries, 2020).
These sources are important when writing researches, persuasive or argumentative essays
when you need evidences coming from the expertise of other authors to support your opinions or
claims.
ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE?
In this part of the module, you will be having a partner to work with and you will need
to make use of what you learned from Practical Research I subject or writing a research paper lesson back
in junior high school.

First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 4
OBJECTIVE:
Classifies contents of different media types. (MIL11/12TYM-IIId-10)
YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY
In previous lessons, you were familiarized with key concepts in media and information
technology. In today’s topic we shall classify the contents of the different types of media.
You may not notice it; but, everyday we are surrounded by different kinds of media like
television, newspaper, radio, social media and a lot more. These are considered as media because they
are means of communication. We get updates on what is going on in and around the world because of
media. We get to communicate with one another through media using cellphone, telephone and social
media platforms. People can also be considered as media because they are “involved in the use, analysis,
evaluation and production of media and information” (Ping, 2016).
The word media is also associated with mass communication or a type of communication that
is able to communicate widely and simultaneously to a large number people by the use of television and
radio and now it uses social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
Media has its different formats and are classified as print, broadcast, film, games and new media
(Andres et al., 2016). Print media consists of paper and ink and are reproduced in a printing process.
This is said to be traditional type of media. Broadcast media uses airwaves in transmitting content.
Films or movies are a type of media that provides entertainment and social awareness. Games are
electronic devices that also provide entertainment especially to the young and are now made available
on smart phones. Lastly, new media which is described to be as highly interactive digital technology
and are changing the way people are entertained and use information according to Southeastern
University (2020)
These types of media may differ in terms of content and form; but, they all have a role to play
in society. They are means to communicate information and to keep the people informed and
entertained.
