Establishing a purpose for the lesson People and other living things cannot live without force. Force allows us to move our bodies and do our daily activities. We also apply force when we use different objects around us. A force acting on an object causes it to change in different ways. Do you want to know the changes that happen to objects when force is applied to them? Look at the picture. Ask: 1. Who are in the picture? 2. Are you familiar with the game that they are playing? 3. What do you call that game? 4. Did you also play Chinese garter? C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson. Force has always been a part of our daily lives. It cannot be seen by our eyes, but we can feel the effect of force on our bodies. Whether we are doing household activities, working in the field, or even playing, we can see the effects of forces in In the illustration above what object was used in playing the game? Do this. Measure the length (centimeter)of the garter by using a ruler. Read the short story. One day, a good Samaritan came to Barangay Mapayapa to distribute 2 sacks of rice for each family in the barangay. Tim was very happy to receive the blessings. He put two sacks of rice inside the cart, but he was not able to push it because the sacks of rice are very heavy. He asked the help of his brother and they happily brought home the blessings that they received. Answer the following questions. 1. Who went to Barangay Mapayapa? 2. Why Tim was so happy that day? 3. Where did he put the two sacks of rice? 4. Why did he ask the help of his brother in pushing the cart? 5. What is the importance of helping others? Look at the pictures. Guide Questions: Problem: What is the effect of force on the size and shape of an object? What you need: rubber ball, can, eggshell, stone, candy wrapper, box, rubber band, chair, bottle cap, paper, hair, biscuit, folder, wire Directions: Prepare the materials. What actions can you do on the objects in order to change their shape, size, or both? Copy and fill out the table below in your Science notebook. The first object was done for you. Guide Questions: 1. What do you think helped you made changes on the different objects? 2. What happened to the shape of some objects when force was applied to them? 3. What happened to the size The creator/editor of this DLL does not claim ownership over its contents such as (pictures, illustrations, stories, etc.). Can you tell me what they are doing? Do you think a force was applied in each activity? D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills. #1 ❖ A force is a push or pull, which occurs when two or more objects interact with each other. ❖ The shape of an object may change when force is applied to it. ❖ Pushing, pulling, pounding, compressing, bending, twisting, tearing, stretching, or squeezing are some ways of changing the shape of an object. Guided Question: 1. What is the length of the garter in picture A? In picture B? 2. Comparing the lengths, what have you observed? 3. What force was exerted? 4. How would you describe the size of the garter after the force was applied to it? Remember these: ❖ When force was applied to an object, the size of an object may change. ❖ Some materials are of different sizes. Some are big, others are small. Some are long others are short. ❖ When force is applied to it, some objects become bigger, smaller, longer, or shorter. ❖ Some situations where force is applied and change the size are the following: 1. In picture A, why Tim could not push the cart? 2. In picture B, why is it easy for them to push the cart? 3. How they make the cart move? Did they use force? 4. Which picture showed that strong force was used? Less force? 5. Do you think we can move an object without using force? Why? The pictures above showed that the force exerted by Tim was not enough to move the cart. The combination of strong force exerted by Tim and his brother made the cart move easier and faster. Force is very important. We cannot move without using any force. It can make an object move and make a moving object go faster or make it slow down. The force applied to an object affects the objects’ movement. Objects with lesser mass require lesser force for it to move it to some distance, while objects with greater mass require greater or stronger force to make it move a longer distance. of some objects when force was applied to them? 4. Is it possible that an object’s shape and size will be affected by the application of the force at the same time? Cite an example. 5. Aside from humans, are there other things that could apply force on an object? Give some examples. 6. How will you describe the effect of force on objects based on the activity? ● A force has amount and direction. ● A force is a push or pull, which occurs when two or more objects interact with each other. ● Effects of Force on Objects The shape of an object may change when force is applied on it. Kneading a dough, pounding pepper, compressing cotton, bending wire, twisting rope, stretching rubber band, or squeezing rubber ball are some ways of changing the shape of an object. Also, when force is applied to an object, the object’s size may change. Some situations where force is applied and changed the size of objects are the following: dropping a glass, pounding garlic, cutting a paper, sharpening a pencil, and grinding papaya. Examples of ways of changing the shape of an object. Let us have another example. ➢ In picture A, the girl pushes the ball with a lesser amount of force. The ball will travel nearer because a lesser amount of force was applied to it. ➢ In picture B, the man throws the ball with a stronger amount of force. The stronger the force exerted, the farther the ball will travel. F. Developing Mastery (Lead to Formative Assessment 3) Read the following situations carefully. Put a (/) on the blank if the shape of an object may change when the force applied on it and put an (X) if not. _____1. breaking an egg _____2. throwing a paper clip _____3. pressing a nail _____4. rolling a ball _____5. biting an apple Draw if the statement describes a change in shape and if not. ___________1. holding a nail ___________2. molding a clay ___________3. pressing a balloon Select the letter of the correct answer. 1. If a boy will have to kick one object, which one from the list below will move the farthest upon kicking? a. shut put ball c. golf ball b. tennis ball d. soft ball 2. Which among the following object will require a greater force to move? a. refrigerator b. desk c. television d. teacher’s table 3. Which of the following objects will move more easily when a force applied toit? a. plastic dining table c. small refrigerator b. empty steel cabinet d. small wooden table The force applied on an object also affects its movement. Force can change the state of rest or motion of an object. An example is when your hand pushes a marble gently on top of a table. The ball then sets into motion. Now, if you keep your hand on the opposite side of the moving ball, the moving ball comes into a state of rest. Force can change the direction of movement of an object. An example is when a football player applies force by kicking the ball in different directions. Force can change how fast or slow the movement of an object is. The ball travels farther when the force applied to it is stronger and the ball travels nearer when lesser force is applied to it. What’s the action? Directions: Choose the word from the box that describes the action shown in these pictures. Write your answers in your notebook. Which among the objects below require lesser force to move? a. book b. notebook c. pencil d. blackboard eraser 5. Upon application of force, which of the following objects will move faster? a. wooden chair b. refrigerator c. table d. ball Push or Pull? Directions: Determine whether the actions involve pushing, pulling or a combination of both by putting a check mark ( ) on the proper column of the table below. Copy the table and write the answers in your notebook. G. Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living Identify the force applied to the following materials to change their shape. Write compressing, bending, stretching, twisting, or pressing.
