Question 1.
Question 2.
The word father becomes [fæder] in the environment of /d/
In the word father, /d/
/ð/
/ð/ in the environment of / [continuant]
Question 3.
All the segments are allophone of one phoneme. For example, in the data set [durç], the
[ç] is pronounced like a “k” sound. Another example in the word [fɪʃtə], the [ʃ] is pronounced as
“sh”. The last segment [x] is pronounced as an “x” sound.
Conclusions I can make about the segments are that they are in complementary
distribution of each other, therefore they are allophones of the same phoneme.
Question 4.
It would be very difficult for an L1 speaker of English to learn the organization of these
segments in German grammar because there are allophones of the same phoneme, making it hard
to distinguish what sounds makes what noise.
