The first definition gives a general
sense of research, that is, a person
who does research gathers information
to learn about a subject. On the other
hand, the second definition gives a
more specific sense of research, that
is, academic research, which involves
investigation or experimentation.

1.A research report posits a research
question. that the research aims to
answer. The information in the research
should help in answering the question.

2. A research report is analytical. The
author studies existing information regarding
a topic and adds his own interpretations and
insights. The report does not simply state
facts or summarize a body of knowledge.

3. A research report always has a thesis
statement. This statement, which is usually
a single sentence, gives the author’s main
argument.

4. A research report uses formal
language. The sentences are generally
long. Contractions and slang are not used.

5. A research report includes sources of
information relevant to the topic. Information
that is not the author’s original ideas should always
be cited, and there should be a list of references at
the end of the paper.

A well-organized research report
is cohesive and coherent in order
to make the ideas clear to readers.
Cohesion and coherence help in
expounding on details, connecting
ideas, and strengthening the
argument.

Cohesion refers to the unity of ideas
within a paragraph. When a paragraph
is cohesive, the ideas within it all relate to
a single main idea. Having cohesive
paragraphs is important, as readers do
not just take into account the meaning of
sentences individually but rather get the
message of the paragraph as a whole.

sources if they want to do further
reading on the topic of
your research.

the authors of the original sources of

When citing sources, you should first choose
which style guide to use. Among the most
common are the American Psychological
Association (APA) and the Modern Language
Association (MLA) styles.
When doing research, keep in mind that the
following should be cited:
1. Information such as facts or statistics that are
not commonly known
2. Statements of other persons used in other
published material
3. Ideas that are not originally your own

Citations, which are called in-
text citations, are included when you’re
adding information from another
individual’s work into your own project.
When you add text word-for-word from
another source into your project, or
take information from another source
and place it in your own words and
writing style (known as paraphrasing),
you create an in-text citation. These
citations are short in length and are
placed in the main part of your project,
directly after the borrowed information.
