FIRST TERM ENGLISH EXAM
PART ONE: READING
(15pts)
Read the passage carefully then do the activities.
The US Department of Labour defines a sweatshop as a factory that violates two or more labour
laws. Sweatshops often have poor working conditions, unfair wages, long hours, child labour, and a lack
of benefits for workers. Workers can even be subject to extreme exploitation, including verbal abuses.
Some are beaten. Some can’t leave the workplace and go home to their families. Some are even abducted
and forced to work. Many companies who use sweatshops prefer to use children so they can pay even less
or nothing at all.
According to Fair Labour Association, at least 18 countries are operating sweatshops, including
Bangladesh, Romania, South Africa, China, India, Vietnam, Mexico, the United States and its territories.
Defenders of sweatshops reason out that “Something is Better than Nothing”. They often bring up
the fact that even though sweatshops are bad, they at least give people jobs they wouldn't have had
otherwise. However, the type of jobs employees receive are so bad that they rarely develop their
economic situation. Since they are paid less than their daily expenses, they can never save any money to
improve their lives.
