Summary of the Essay: “Who Killed Benny Paret?”, focuses on a brutal boxing match between Emile Griffith and Benny Paret. This fight led to Paret’s death after being in a coma for 9 days. The fight witnessed by millions of shocked viewers went twelve rounds and ended with Griffith driving Paret onto the ropes and brutally beating him. Cousins focuses on all the dangers and consequences that come with the sport of boxing. Cousins partially blames the audience because they come out to see the knockout but he also mentions that the referee could have stopped the fight. However he states that real reason for Paret’s death is the fact that he got punched i the head multiple times and suffered injuries leading to his death. Despite all that was said the title of the essay still leaves us thinking what exactly was the cause of Benny Paret’s death. Figurative Language Allusion - There was nothing spectacular in Mr. Jacobs’ manner or appearance; but when he spoke about prize fights, he was no longer a bland little man but a colossus who sounded the way Napoleon must have sounded when he reviewed a battle. Hyperbole - So you searched for the killers and sluggers and maulers — fellows who could hit with the force of a baseball bat. Imagery - The time the crowd comes alive is when a man is hit hard over the heart or the head, when his mouthpiece flies out, when the blood squirts out of his nose or eyes, when he wobbles under the attack and his pursuer continues to smash at him with pole-axe impact. It was also a source of entertainment for people. I think Cousins does agree with him. At the end of the essay, he does emphasize about how people enjoy prize fight and go to see them for entertainment and knockout. n o i s n e h e r p Com s n o i t s e Qu e s u a c e t a i d e m m i e e t h o t m s e a r w t t a a h h W W ? h t a e s r d o s t ’ t a e g i r t a s P e v f n o i e h t o d t i d g n i s d r o c c cause a , t a h — W e ? s r u e a c n i a consid m e h y t r s a a m i w r , p s “ n i e s h t s Cou e o d e r e h ? w e i , l s ) i 9 ( ” y t that i l i b i s n o p res s t’ e r a P f o e s u a c te ia d e m im The e th in it h s a w e h t a th s a w death head multiple times. the id D : e r a s e s u a c te o m e r r e th O e th p to s to e m ti in t c a e e r fe e r g in in m a x e e th f o le o r e th , t? h fig l a ic s y h p e th d e fi ti r e c o h w s r docto e th e r fo e b s r te h g fi e th f o s fitnes h s u r r e g a n a m s t’ e r a P id D d n fight, a the boy into the fight without e th m o fr r e v o c e r to e m ti adequate last fight? y r a im r “p e th , s in s u o C to g in d r o Acc o h w le p o e p e th in s lie ” ty ili ib s n o resp pay to see a man get hurt. n o i s n e h e r p Com s n o i t s e Qu s n i s u o C s e o d o y t h e l W i t u f s i t i “ e v e i l e h t be e t a g i t s e ? ) inv 9 ( ” e l o r s ’ e e r e f e r Cousins believed it was futile to investigate the referee’s role because it was important to determine whether he should have intervened to stop the fight earlier. n o i s n e h e r p Com s n o i t s e Qu y a s s e s i h s d n e s y l n i e s s i u c e Co r p s i t a h t d n e A “ h t h t s i i w t a h W ” . t n i o p ? e o h t t s r e f e r e h ” t n i o p “ The “point” is that people will miss fighting if it is thrown out. The people enjoy it because it is a proper enterprise and a form of entertainment. What we found interesting about the essay: The vivid portrayl of the fight: the author uses impactful description which creates a emotional connection with the reader. That instead of blaming the refferee, manger or opponent the real culprit is the audiences desire for violence The author argues that boxing is not about skill or athletism but being able to satisfy the crowds need for violence and brutality. Thank you!
