Nonsense Word Racer
Students work to improve nonsense word
fluency. Students read each word as
quickly as they can. Parents will time
student and record that time on the
paper. They should repeat this activity 34 times through the week trying to
decrease the amount of time it takes to
read the entire page.

Words!

Each partner should choose a different color of
marker/crayon. Students will take turns reading a
nonsense word and coloring that square with their
color. The goal is to color 4 boxes vertical, horizontal,
or diagonal. The person who has the most 4 in a
rows wins. If you have a group of three, it is easier
to have them work for 3 in a row.

Both players need a “Switch” game board and one 6sided die per pair. One student is reading and crossing
off as many nonsense words as they can, while their
partner is continuously rolling a dice. As soon as a six
is rolled, the player says “switch”. They now switch
roles, and the other partner is rolling the die while
their partner reads nonsense words. Students continue
to play until one player finishes reading all of their
words or the teacher stops the game!

Flashcard Games
Option 1- Fluency Roll For More!
Print at least 1-2 copies of the cards on cardstock.
Directions: Place cards face down in center of group of 3 or 4. The first student
rolls the die and follows the directions on the “Roll For More” Dice Key. When a
student pulls a card from the center or from the person to the right or left, they
must read the card to keep it. Students continue to take turns rolling and pulling
cards. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
Option 2- Race to Win!
Students play with a partner or group. They take turns rolling a die and moving that
many spaces forward. I also includes a spinner if you would only like them to only
move forward 4 (at most). Students will need to use a paperclip and pencil to make
their spinner. Every time a student lands on a new square they must pick a card and
read the nonsense words. Some squares will require them to pick 2 cards. First
person that reaches the end wins!
Option 3- Gotcha!
Print flash cards and gotcha cards on cardstock. Shuffle them and place them face
down in center of group. Player one pulls a card and reads it. Player one continues to
pull cards until he pulls a gotcha! Once a “Gotcha” is pulled it is the next players turn.
Students continue to play until all cards are gone or the teacher stops them. The
person with the most cards wins!

Jenga
Students pull cards and read them from top to bottom—
saying the vowel sound, 2 letter nonsense word, and 3
letter nonsense words. The color of the card tells them
the color of Jenga block they must pull. They continue
to play until someone knocks over the tower.
Kerplunk
Students pull cards and read them from top to bottom—
saying the vowel sound, 2 letter nonsense word, and 3
letter nonsense words. The color of the card tells them
the color of stick they must pull. The person with the
fewest marbles at the end wins!
I included multiple colors depending on which style Jenga or Kerplunk you
own, plus extra red, yellow green for kerplunk!
