Figure 1. Concept Map on Philippine Local Political Dynamics
The hunger for power due to the oppressive system shown by the Colonial masters of the
Philippines has made an impact on the Political dynamics of the Philippine Local Politics. As the
power within the central government in Manila weakened, it created a way for local political
actors to influence the decision-making process as they have control over their respective
jurisdictions which became a ground for the creation of the Legislative Body from 1906 to 1907.
Through years of contestation for power, a cultural way of thinking from Filipinos has developed
into the system itself for Philippine Local politics. The bonds and ties of families turned dyadic.
Such use of connections created concepts like political machineries, parochial loyalties, and
patronage alliances that, in broad scope, correlate to what political scientists ought to break down
in thought—the Political Dynamics within the Philippine Local Politics.
The oppressive system in which political dynamics come into play can be dated back to
the eras in which we were colonized. It has been rooted in our history, as well as our culture.
Theories such as the Patronage-Client Factional Framework, Strong Families, Weak State Thesis,
the concept of Bossism, etc. are the result and representation that the culture has remained with
us throughout the years. Furthermore, this phenomenon has translated into control over certain
jurisdictions and monopolistic control over certain regions in the Philippines. In fact, one
prominent effect of this would be widespread political dynasties that are present in every district,
city, or state. The Philippines has a long-standing history and culture of political power that
reside over certain families. In fact, 73 out of 81 provinces across the country have around 180
politicians related by kinship and blood.
The concept map showcases the framework which explains how the theories are applied
to the phenomenon that are present before and even present in our society now. It is key to
understand the current political and administrative state of our country, we need to decipher its
root causes, history, and analysis that are based on facts and theories that can prove this.
Additionally, the political dynamics that are present in our local politics contain nuances and
complexities that we can use in order to improve the political state that we are currently in.
