Every individual has their strengths and weaknesses. 1 What is It Identify Strengths and Weaknesses “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” While others can easily answer this question, it may sound tricky to some individuals because they do not take time to evaluate themselves. But how do we define strengths and weaknesses? Strength, according to Cambridge Dictionary, is the “ability to do things that need a lot of physical or mental effort”. You can easily do and learn things without much effort. It can be skills, innate talents, behaviors, characteristics, and learned knowledge. You were able to develop these strengths because you probably spent much time focusing on these areas or as a result of our observation. Strength, however, is much more than that. According to Marcus Buckingham and Donald Clifton, authors of Now, Discover Your Strength, a true strength meets three criteria: (1) you are good or have the potential to be good at it; (2) you are energized by doing it; and (3) it benefits something greater than yourself. Weakness on the other hand is defined in Cambridge Dictionary as “a particular part or quality of someone or something that is not good or effective”. These are the things that you found difficult to learn or do. Weaknesses are part of your life where you have that very limited experience that you have come across, and given very limited attention to, or being misguided in some other way. These include poor learned behavior, limiting beliefs, underdeveloped characteristics and skills, and inadequate knowledge. The three main reasons why we have weaknesses: (1) because of lack of experience; (2) because we had been misguided in some other ways; (3) The set of limiting beliefs that lead to less than optimal habits of thinking. Alternatively, your weaknesses can also stem from a lack of resources, lack of support, or lack of self-discipline. Identify Your Strength and Weaknesses? A self-knowledge is a powerful tool that can help you nurture your professional interactions and stabilize your personal life. While this is something you will have to figure out mostly on your own, there are exercises you can do to identify your strengths and weaknesses. 1. Understand your abilities Clarify your core values. Some beliefs will shape your think about yourself, others, and the world around you. Determine whether your life aligns with your values. Living life with those values is called “value-congruent” living, 2 and it can lead to a greater feeling of satisfaction. Consider whether or not the environment you live in is conducive to your strengths and personal attributes. Think about how you can either change the situation or move to an environment within which your strengths might be more highly valued. 2. Perform reflective best self exercises. 3. List your actions Remember the challenging experiences you had and create your spontaneous reaction to the situations that happen. You can also consider difficult times that can relate to your situation. 4. List your desires Your desires and longings can say a lot about you even if you spend time denying them. Write down the things you enjoy and things that motivate you. 5. Assess your strengths and weaknesses Think of your weaknesses as part of your growth and development.
