INTERPRETING GMDAS RULE AND
PERFORMING DIFERENT
OPERATIONS ON WHOLE NUMBERS
for Mathematics Grade 6
Quarter 2 / Week 6
FOREWORD
This Self-Learning Kit is made to further improve your critical
thinking and problem solving skills. It will serve as a guide in
interpreting and performing different operations following the
(GEMDAS)Rule. It will help you enhance your skills in writing and
evaluating expressions correctly.
In this learning kit, the pupils will also gain knowledge in
performing two or more different operations on whole numbers
with or without exponents and grouping symbols.
The following are the special and unique features of the SelfLearning Kit:
A. WHAT HAPPENED The pupils are ask to answer activities that
will allow them to apply what they have learned prior to
the discussion of the learning competency.
B. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW This is the part where the learning
competency/ies is/are being discussed.
C. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED It aims to check the pupils
understanding of the learning competency in interpreting
and performing different operations on whole numbers
with or without exponents and grouping symbols following
the (GEMDAS)Rule.
Math is fun. We hope that this Self-Learning Kit will help our
dear pupils to enhance their mathematical skills that would
soon be applied in their everyday life.

OBJECTIVES:
• Interprets the Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition,
Subtraction (GEMDAS) Rule.
• Performs two or more different operations on whole numbers with or
without exponents and grouping symbols.
• Be careful in evaluating the expressions involving different operations.

WHAT HAPPENED
Hi! How’s your day?
I’m glad to be with you this time.
Are your familiar with the GMDAS
Rule?
Do you know how to evaluate
expression with two or more
operations?
Let me discuss with you on how
to evaluate expression using
the GMDAS Rule.
Are you interested?
Let’s find out….
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Simplify the following expressions by performing the
indicated operations. Write your answers in your notebook.
1) 4 + 9 – 5 =
2) 28 - 20 – 6 =
3) 5 x 12 ÷ 4 =
4) 320 ÷ 8 x 5 =
5) 25+ 33 – 52 =
3
ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Write each of the following in expanded form and find its
value. Do this in your notebook.
Exponential
Form
1) 26
2) 102
3) 53
4) 32
5) 63

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Richard and Robert are both working on the value of the
expression: 2 + 4 x 3 - 6 ÷ 2. However, they have different answers.
Richard answered 6 while Robert answered 11. Which of the two pupils
answered correctly?
Note: In a series of operations without grouping symbols,
multiplication and division are performed first from left to right,
followed by addition and subtraction, whichever comes first from left
to right.
Thus, to solve 2 + 4 x 3 - 6 ÷ 2,
Multiplication:
Division:
Addition:
Subtraction:
Answer:
2 + (4 x 3) - 6 ÷ 2
2 + 12 - (6 ÷ 2)
(2 +12) - 3
14 - 3
11
Therefore, Robert got the correct answer by following the MDAS rule.
DISCUSSION
A series of operations may also involve grouping symbols and
exponents in solving series of operations, the following rules can be
used:
 Rule 1: Simplify the operations inside the grouping symbols first.
Grouping symbols are always done from the innermost set
outward.
4
 Rule 2: Evaluate exponential expressions.
 Rule 3: Multiply and divide in the order they appear from left to right.
 Rule 4: Add and subtract in the order they appear from left to right.
This is what we now call the GEMDAS rule.
G → Grouping (Parentheses)
E → Exponent
M → Multiplication
D → Division
A → Addition
S → Subtraction
Let us apply the GEMDAS rule;
Example 1
Simplify:
2 + (7 x 3) - 5
= 2 + (7 x 3) - 5
= 2 + 21 - 5
= 23 – 5
= 18
Multiply 7 and 3 first.
Add and subtract from left to right.
Answer: 18
Example 2
Simplify: 3 x 4 ÷ (7 - 5) - 12 ÷ 4
= 3 x 4 ÷ (7 - 5) - 12 ÷ 4 Simplify first the expression inside
the parentheses.
= 3 x 4 ÷ 2 - 12 ÷ 4 Then, perform the multiplication
= 12 ÷ 2 - 12 ÷ 4
and division from left to right.
=6-3
Subtract
=3
Answer: 3
5
Example 3
Simplify:
102 - 24 ÷ 3
= 102 - 24 ÷ 3 Perform first the number with exponent
=100 - 24 ÷ 3 Then, perform the division
=100 - 8
Subtract
= 92
Answer: 92
Example 4
Simplify:
53 – (4 x 8) + 4
= 53 - (4 x 8) + 4 Simplify first the number inside the
parenthesis
3
= 5 - 32 + 4
Next, perform the number with exponent
=125 - 32 + 4
Perform the subtraction
= 93 +4
and addition from left to right.
= 97
Answer: 97
III.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED?
EVALUATION/POST TEST:
ACTIVITY 1

your notebook.
1) 92 + 4 x 3 - 20
4) 14 + (6 x 2) + 32
2) 27 ÷ 3 x 4 + 5
5) 33 + (4 x 2) + 3
3) 6 + 4 x 5 ÷ 2
6
ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Evaluate the following expressions. Write your answers in
your notebook.
1. 4 x 3 + 8 – 2 =
2. 7 x 8 + 130 =
3. 15 x 5 ÷ 3 + 10 =
4. 53 + 7 - 10 x 3 =
5. 3 + 83 – 73 =
