Searching for myself online
After searching for both my English and legal name online, I found nothing except a few
people whose names are the same as mine along with their social media accounts. I also was
not able to find any pictures of myself in the images section, which consisted of mostly
LinkedIn profile pictures. I think this is because my social media accounts are all private, and I
never engage in public conversations online. However, I am aware that people who follow me
on Instagram and able to view my posts and stories, hence why I should still be aware of my
digital footprint.

How might my digital footprint affect my personal brand
and future opportunities?
When companies are considering to hire me, they may look at my
digital footprint such as social media profiles and posts to
ensure I am a responsible and appropriate person to hire. If
they see a lot of positive posts such as my achievements, they
might be more likely to have a good impression of me and
therefore consider to hire me. However, if the company sees me
arguing and swearing online all the time, they might think I am
rude and not a compatible person to hire. Since things posted
online do not disappear, it is important to maintain an
appropriate digital footprint to leave a good impression,
especially in important cases such as applying for a university
or job.

What information have I unintentionally shared?
When I register accounts and memberships or subscribe to certain
websites, I am usually required for to fill in my email or phone
number. In many cases, things like age, gender, and country are also
asked to be stated. When I fill in these things, I am sharing my
personal information to the operator of the website, where then it
could be sold to other websites without my consent to create things
like personalized ads. Scammers also purchase your personal
information from these sites like phone numbers to scam call. An
example of this is when I search up something on Instagram, then I
start getting ads about that thing on multiple apps and websites.

What is digital permanence?
Digital permanence refers to the lasting and permanent nature of information
and data on the internet. Once information is posted online, it becomes
impossible to difficult to erase or remove. For example, when you delete a
comment on a YouTube video, on the surface, the comment is gone from public
view. However, that comment may forever be stored somewhere in the ocean of
data. Factors that contribute to digital permanence include platforms’ data
retention policies and re-sharing content.

Why should we care and be aware of
digital permanence?
Our online presence can have a significant impact on our reputation in
professional situations and on a daily basis. Content, even if posted years ago,
can resurface and influence how colleagues, employers, or universities perceive
us. Even if we delete things we regret posting, people might screenshot, save,
and spread the blackmail, inevitably causing damage to our reputation and image.
Things we say on the internet cannot be taken back, hence why we must be aware
of digital permanence.
