The section for Arts provides concepts, principles and elements of visual arts. Varied
activities are provided in this section to give learners opportunities to appreciate Asian art.
The learners will be able to express and show their skills in the most enjoyable way.
I.
OBJECTIVES
After accomplishing the module, the students should be able to:
a. understand the salient features of the artworks from the different countries in Southeast Asia;
b. identify the different characteristics of the work of art of each country;
c. appreciate the artifacts and art objects in terms of their utilization and their distinct use of art elements and
principles; and
d. create crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials, guided by local traditional techniques (e.g.
batik, silk weaving, etc.).

Indonesian Art:
Indonesian Fabric Design
a. Nitik – the most famous design
b. Kawung - old design consisting of intersecting circle
c. Parang – shows slanting rows of thick knife-like segments running in parallel diagonal bands in
dark contrasting colors
d. Modern batik – shows linear treatment of leaves, flowers, and birds
MALAYSIA
Pottery is also a famous handicraft in Malaysia.
a. Labu Sayong is a gourd-shaped clay jar that is used to hold water and has a glossy black-color.
b. Terenang has a wide mouth and is used for storage of water.
c. Belenga is a clay bowl with a wide base that is used in cooking.

Malaysia is also famous for its traditional and colorful kites, called wau.

Thai Silk
1. Hand woven in Khorat and natural fiber comes from the silkworm.
2. Thai silk has two unique blends: one color for the wrap and another for
the weft.

Loi Krathong
It is a colorful festival held annually on the twelfth month in the Thai Lunar
Calendar which is a full moon. It is celebrated to show respect to the goddess of
water and seek forgiveness for the pollution.

household basket.

The culture of Myanmar was greatly influenced by Buddhism from the countries of India, China and
Thailand.
Some of Myanmar traditional art forms are woodcarving (Panpu), gold and silver smith (Pandain) and
painting (panchi).

Po Klang Garai Cham – as influenced by India, China, Confucianism, Buddhism
and Taoism, Vietnam’s sculpture and architecture use muted colors and variety
of materials.

Woodblock printing or Dong Ho – a Vietnamese folk art.
The background paper used in this folk art is originally white from the bark of
a tree called dyo.

The culture of Singapore is a combination of Asian and European cultures influenced by Malay,
Southern Asia, East Asian, and Eurasian cultures.
Singaporeans usually use landscapes, portraits, urban, still life, abstracts, village scenes and human
figures in creating their paintings.

The Merlion is a traditional creature in Western heraldry that
depicts a creature with a lion’s head and body of a fish. It is
considered as the iconic sculpture of Singapore.
BRUNEI

Old and new art was combined in order to create Brunei art which includes sculpture, photography,
paintings and architecture.
Both sexes shared art in the country of Brunei. Men usually work with metal and wood while women
create art through the use of textiles and bead works.
Headgears for men in Brunei:
1. Dastar – a piece of cloth tied around the head
2. Songkok or kopiah – a slightly oblong head gear with horizontal top made from velvet
3. Tangkolok or serban – resembles a turban and is a typical headdress in Middle East

PERFORMANCE TASK
Directions: Create an artwork through soap carving. Use Perla soap and any pointed materials for carving.
This activity is equivalent to 20 points.
What to do:
1. Get an image of the Merlion and carefully draw it on top of the soap with any pointed material.
2. Gently carve your masterpiece.
3. If you choose to submit it online, kindly take a picture of your output and send it to your respective
subject teachers.
