NARRATIVE REPORT ON CATCH UP FRIDAYS
(Drop Everything And Read-DEAR)
I. INTRODUCTION
The Department of Education together with the schools all over the Philippines
launched a ground-breaking program called Catch-Up Fridays, which has gained
popularity as a creative way to encourage students' literacy and enjoyment of reading.
This program's introduction of "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) sessions every Friday is
one of its most notable features. This narrative report seeks to illustrate the effects of DEAR
on the school community while delving into the specifics of Catch-Up Fridays.
II. BACKGROUND
The Department of Education came up with ideas for motivating pupils to interact
with literature outside of their regular schoolwork after realizing the importance of setting
aside specific time to promote a reading culture. As a result, a weekly event called
"Catch-Up Fridays" was created to allow students to catch up on reading assignments,
explore personal interests, and develop the habit of reading for enjoyment.
III. IMPLEMENTATION
The DEAR project, which encourages both students and staff to give up everything
for a set amount of time and immerse themselves in the world of books, is at the core of
Catch-Up Fridays. Because the sessions are well planned, participants can relax and
enjoy reading at the conclusion of the week. This change in routine acts as a mental
reset, fostering an atmosphere where students can concentrate on their literary
endeavors.
The DEAR program is easily incorporated into the academic calendar. Books that
appeal to a variety of interests and reading levels are provided in every classroom. The
ability for students to select what they read helps them feel more independent as they
explore literature. Instructors are proactive in pointing students in the direction of
appropriate reading material and leading class discussions about the selected materials.

DEAR sessions have had a significant effect on student engagement and literacy
levels. Along with expanding their reading comprehension, students are also growing to
appreciate books. Interest in further reading materials and extracurricular literary
activities has increased because of the initiative's stimulation of curiosity and intellectual
inquiry.
IV. Conclusion:
For Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School, programs like the DEAR movement and
Catch-Up Fridays have shown to be revolutionary. The school has effectively promoted
a culture of literacy by incorporating set time for reading into the weekly schedule, which
has improved students' academic performance and instilled a lifetime love of reading.
As the program develops further, it acts as a shining example of innovation in education,
highlighting the significant influence that modest but successful actions may have on
influencing students' academic and personal growth.
