LAWS OF MOTION

Science, science, science!
Welcome to “Magi-Science”! You must pay attention, stay focused, and be involved!
Today's adventure will be all about the “Laws of Motion”. You will learn about its importance, how to identify
which law it is, and.. Unveil the Secrets to some magic tricks! But who will help us with these tricks?
Let me present to you our guide through the wonders of physics with a touch of magic, the enigmatic…
Mr. Megistus!
Today, Mr. Megistus will perform three different tricks.
For the first trick, Megistus the Magician will pull the cloth off the table very fast while there are items on it.
What do you think will happen?
The items stayed! That’s amazing!
For his 2nd trick, he will push a large boulder. He’s quite strong! But will he succeed?
Oh yes, he did! He’s really strong!
And now, for the final trick, Mr. Megistus will float! Now let’s see if he can reach high.
Wow! Let’s give a round of applause to Megistus the Magician! Now.. How did he exactly do those tricks?
Of course, the answer is.. The 3 Laws of Motion!
The 3 Laws of Motion were formulated by this man known as Sir Isaac Newton! Through his careful
observation and mathematical insights, he connected these laws to the fundamental principles governing the
motion of objects. Now, what are the 3 Laws of Motion? And how do they connect to what Megistus the
Magician did earlier? Let’s begin by finding out the secrets to it!
For the 1st trick. Megistus pulled the cloth fast, and the items stayed. This is possible due to the 1st Law of
Motion, the Law of Inertia!
What is inertia? Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion. The Law of Inertia
asserts that objects will remain at rest or in motion unless acted upon by an external force, influencing
changes in speed, direction, or other motion aspects.
But what does that have to do with the trick? Yes, the tablecloth was pulled very fast, but we must note
friction. How did the items not get pulled along with the cloth? Because it is “slippery”, with little friction. That’s
why the items stayed on the table.
More examples of this come from the fact that we get pulled back when we are in a moving vehicle | or when
dust falls out of a mat when it is shaken. If there was no inertia, a lot of things would go into chaos!
For the 2nd trick—Megistus pushed a large boulder, but it managed to move quickly with just a simple push!
How did he do it? Well, the “boulder” was foam! The foam's lightness is due to the air in its holes, when
pushed, allows it to accelerate easily. This relates to the 2nd Law of Motion, the Law of Acceleration!"
What is the Law of Acceleration? The Law of Acceleration says that to make something speed up, you must
apply more force. This law applies the formula
“force equals mass times acceleration”. So, when pushing
a heavy object, like a door or a cart, you need more force to make it go faster.
And for the final trick, Mr. Megistus managed to float! But how? Let’s start with its secret. There is an attached
wire behind the magician's back. The wire is connected to a pole backstage. When the pole lowers, Megistus
goes up—thanks to a pulley system. This trick relates to the 3rd Law of Motion!"
The law of Interaction states that “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction’. The tension on
the pulley is on the pole because it is a lot heavier than Megistus. And of course, once it’s lowered, Megistus
will be pulled up.
Try it with a smaller object with a string, the same thing will happen. That is the Law of Interaction. It is the
reason why Megistus can levitate, why we can walk, and why there is a slight bounce on objects once they
fall.
Those laws are the Laws of Motion. Now, let’s do a simple activity. You must identify which kind of law it is.
Whether it be Inertia, Acceleration, or Interaction.
For the first one, identify which law it is!

In 3.. 2.. 1.. your answer is? ….Correct! It is the Law of Interaction!
And the second one, identify which law it is!
(Image of Megistus on a moving vehicle)
In 3.. 2.. 1.. your answer is? …That is right! It is the Law of Inertia!
And for the final one, which law it is?

In 3.. 2.. 1.. tell us your answer? And correct! It is the Law of Acceleration!
Congrats on getting all the answers correctly! Here is a badge for you to enjoy.
What exactly is the importance of the 3 Laws of Motion in our lives?
Walking, opening doors, playing sports, driving, and more are possible with the Laws of Motion. Without it,
everything would be thrown into chaos. Everyone would be flying everywhere; a lot of things wouldn’t work
without these laws.
So, do you understand what the Laws of Motion are? Great!
Now, let us all say thank you to our guest---Megistus the Magician for making our discussion easier and more
entertaining.
Bye Mr. Megistus…
Wow in an instance, he is gone. Is there another Science behind that? I guess that’s a topic for a different
day.
Thank you for listening and participating with today’s adventure. Don’t forget to tune in again to…
