5 Ws & H Differentiated Activities Whole Group Small Group Independent Practice plus This resource was designed with English language learners in mind. It is differentiated so that scaffolds can slowly be removed while students learn to expand their sentences using meaningful details. The goal is to have students add details to their sentences. This resource is not about teaching grammar or run-ons, although this would be a great tool to identify those areas your students need instruction in and use this as practice. It is about adding details to make a sentence for meaningful. CONTENTS: pgs. 4-5 Writing Sentences Poster and Checklist (for student notebooks) pgs. 6 – 29 Whole Group Activity - Project the full page photograph so that the class/group can all see it. Give each student the accompanying student page. Through prompting, ask students to answer the 5W & H questions about the photo. After they’ve filled in the information in the chart, ask them to create a sentence using information from several of the question words. In the second sentence, see if they can include the remaining information. Have students check to be sure they’ve included proper capitalization and punctuation. pgs. 30 – 45 Small Group or Independent Activity with photographs – give each student a half page and ask them to fill out information about the photo or illustration that answers the 5W & H questions. Just as before, they’ll write two sentences using as much of the information as they reasonably can. They’ll also check their work for proper capitalization and punctuation. This set of activities becomes a more independent or small group activity. It could also be a warm up or writing center activity, homework or a informal assessment tool. pgs. 46 – 57 Small Group or Independent Activity with illustrations – same as above, but this practice is with black and white illustrations. pgs. 58 – 60 Writing Prompts - short writing prompts. This activity is even more independent, with little to no scaffolds. I’d recommend either posting a prompt on the board and having students respond in their notebooks, or make copies and have students glue the prompt into their notebooks before responding. The goal is to add details to sentences in order to make them more interesting and meaningful. pg. 61 - 5W & H Graphic Organizer - perfect for reading, writing, listening and speaking activities.
