European Day of Languages by Hana Hrúzová 9.A What is EDL? • EDL is a well-established opportunity to raise awareness about language learning and linguistic diversity • We celebrate it on September 26th • It was created by Council of Europe and the European Commisio • They wanted to teach people that there are cultural differences in different countries European Day of Languages • There are about 225 indigenous languages in Europe • 56% of EU citizens speak a language other than their mother tongue • Most of the European languages are of IndoEuropean origin • Currently the most popular foreign language in Europe is English Netherlands – Dutch language • Their official language is Dutch but French, English, and German are also common to hear • West Germanic language spoken by about 25 million people as a first language • Dutch language is also called Netherlandic, in Belgium called Flemish or Flemish Vlaams • The language before Dutch was called Old Dutch Old Dutch • Also called Old Low Franconian is the set of Franconian dialects spoken during the Early Middle Ages from around the 6th to 11th century • Its regarded as the primary stage in the development of a separate Dutch language • Spoken by the descendants of the Salian Franks Quiz 1.
