PPE typically includes gloves, eye protection, respirators, hand protection, fall protection, face protection, and foot protection. This E-book will cover necessary regulations for PPE, why PPE is important, and also introduce individual PPE products. Shop now 4 DEFINITION According to OSHA, Personal Protective Equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimise exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits. In 2020, PPE has become one of the main concerns for many organisations. Since the Covid-19 pandemic has spread across the world, community cases have gone up. Not only do organisations need to discover new safety solutions to protect their employees and adapt to the current situation, the government must set new plans and requirements for this pandemic. Shop now 5 DEFINITION According to OSHA, there are significant standards and requirements for preventing occupational exposure to Covid-19. This includes: OSHA's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards (in general industry, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart I), and, in construction, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart E), which require that a PPE hazard assessment be conducted to assess workplace hazards, and that PPE, such as respiratory protection, be used when necessary. When respirators are necessary to protect workers, employers must implement a comprehensive respiratory protection program in accordance with the Respiratory Protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134). Employers must protect their workers from exposure to hazardous chemicals used for cleaning and disinfection. Employers should be aware that common sanitizers and sterilizers could contain hazardous chemicals. Where workers are exposed to hazardous chemicals, employers must comply with OSHA's Hazard Communication standard. Shop now 6 WHY IS PPE IMPORTANT Ensuring a safe workplace includes providing instructions, procedures, training, and supervision to encourage people to work safely and responsibly. Even when engineering controls and safe systems of work have been applied, some hazards may remain. These include injuries to: the lungs, e.g. from breathing in contaminated air the head and feet, e.g. from falling materials the eyes, e.g. from flying particles or splashes of corrosive liquids the skin, e.g. from contact with corrosive materials the body, e.g. from extremes of heat or cold PPE is needed in all of these cases to reduce the risk of injury Shop now 7 PROPER USAGE OF PPE All personal protective equipment should be safely designed and constructed and should be maintained in a clean and reliable fashion. It should fit comfortably, encouraging the worker to always use it. If the personal protective equipment does not fit properly, it can make the difference between being safely covered or dangerously exposed. When engineering, work practice, and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection, employers must provide personal protective equipment to their workers and ensure its proper use. Employers are required to train employees wearing personal protective equipment so they t know: When it is necessary What kind is necessary How to properly put it on, adjust, wear and take it off The limitations of the equipment Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the equipment If PPE is to be used, a PPE program should be implemented. This program should address the hazards present; the selection, maintenance, and use of PPE; the training of employees; and monitoring of the program to ensure its ongoing effectiveness. Shop now 8 TYPES We believe that the concept of PPE most likely is not new to anyone working in an industrial environment. There are several types of PPE that will be discussed in this chapter, including: 1 Respiratory Protection 2 Head Protection 3 Eyewear Protection 4 Face Protection 5 Hearing Protection 6 Hand Protection 7 Foot Protection 8 Fall Protection Shop now 9 CHAPTER 2 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Shop now 10 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION We provide a full line of reusable respirators to meet the needs of any work environment. Shop now 14 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Disposable respirators According to American Thoracic Society, a disposable respirator fits over the nose and mouth. It removes very small particles from the air you breathe. These particles include germs (like viruses, bacteria, and mold) and other kinds of dust. A disposable respirator does not have replacement parts. It is meant to be thrown away after use. While disposable respirators look similar to masks used during surgery and other medical procedures, the two are designed for very different purposes. Surgical masks are primarily made to keep particles breathed out by the wearer – for example, saliva or mucus – from contaminating the work environment. Respirators, on the other hand, protect the wearer against potentially hazardous particles created by the work environment. A disposable respirator should be worn: when in a moldy building, such as after a flood when visiting or caring for someone in the hospital with tuberculosis if recommended during an outbreak of influenza (“flu”) or other infection if recommended by your doctor if required in your workplace Shop now 15 RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Here are some disposable respirator models: Respirator 8210 Breathe easier! Hard hats are made specially for high-risk environments, unlike ordinary bump caps, that do not have the impact to bounce off hard elements to protect the worker’s head. Regular cleaning and inspection to ensure no holes, cracks or damages will extend the useful life of the head protection. Cleaning agents may weaken the exterior of the hard hats, which may eliminate the electrical resistance. Instead, simply rinse it with normal temperature water. Furthermore, do not try to keep the hard hats directly under the sunlight, as the ultra-violet (UV) ray and heat will cause damage to it. Designed to diffuse pressure over the ears, the glasses automatically adjust to the head and facial features of the wearer. Weighing less than 1 ounce, the durable, snug fitting, flexible nature of SecureFit offers a more comfortable and personal fit than old fashion “one size fits all” glasses that are rigid and unyielding in design. These glasses adapt to the wearer, rather than the other way around. The snug fit also keeps the glasses securely in place as the wearer looks up and down or side to side, eliminating the need for frequent repositioning of the glasses due to head movement. In addition, these safety glasses help eliminate the expense of stocking multiple frame sizes at job sites to accommodate different people. The anti fog coating on the lenses helps reduce the chances of fogging in hot and humid environments. Anti fogging properties help maintain visibility and reduce the need to remove glasses to wipe away moisture from the lenses. This safety system includes ratchet headgear and a polycarbonate face shield. An adjustable thirteen-position ratchet suspension and five-position crown strap offer customiszed settings for individual users. The clear, molded faceshield provides unrestricted visibility and high impact protection. Workers performing tasks in which flying sparks or particles are present should wear protection to shield their face and head. Industries in which this is typically true include metalworking, utilities, and woodworking. Because the shield does not fully enclose the face, protective eyewear should also be worn to safeguard eyes. The W-Series Faceshields offer optical clarity and high-performance durability in unpredictable environments that involve exposure to impact hazards and flying debris. Clear Polycarbonate Faceshield with molded polycarbonate faceshield provides an impact head and face protection in working environments with sparks, chips, and debris.
