Reading Assignment – Seven: Dance in the 21st Cent
Postmodernism transitioned from traditional standards into a more developed way of dance. Not
only did the constantly changing global culture play a role in this but experimentation did as well.
The choreographers experimented with movement indicating self expression, along with
spontaneous moves. These choreographers and dancers have transformed and enhanced
dance in many ways. Postmodernism has developed specific interests to differentiate from the
traditional practices:
1. This interest used the concept of improvisation and spontaneous movement. In some
cases, it would be choreographed and others would be completely based off of the
dancer. The movements consist of repeating movements.

b. This dance was performed in a room with a singular dancer. The dancer is seen
expressing movement and use of his arms to almost guide his body. The
movements are quick and concise. It can also determine that the dancer is using
strength with the movement he is making.
2. This interest guided dance in a new direction, introducing the idea of new concepts for
the story of dances. This could include a person's history or social factors/issues.

b. This dance is representing social issues within the world, which is why it is titled
trauma. It is considered a huge social issue in the world. Each dancer is solemn
with expression
3. This interest increases the amount of physical ability included with movement. A dancer
has to use more strength and longevity.

b. These dancers are shown using a variety of extremely physically challenging
movements. They are completely synchronized but all dancers are turning,
stretching, and jumping.
4. There was no longer a “masculine” or “feminine”; unisex

b. I feel as if this dance also shows the development of unisex attire. Each dancer is
wearing a white outfit and doing similar movements.
5. Lastly, this interest is the idea of personalized costumes. Not every individual has to
wear the exact costume, it can be shaped differently, or its only similarity could be the
color.

b. Each costume is different and unique. Some may represent the same but
differently for each dancer.
