Professional skills portfolio PORT1 Pass marks are 40% for undergraduate work and 50% for postgraduate work unless stated otherwise. Task/assessment brief: This assessment is designed to support you to becoming students of higher education and to be successful on your journey. PORT 1 is designed to frame your studies around professional skills, needed to progress throughout your programme of study, and to underpin your future career trajectory. The teaching on Explore will introduce you to a range of people, professional skills and competencies. PORT 1 will enable you to evidence this in a portfolio to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding, along with your learning through reflective practice. This assessment is designed to enable you to work methodically through a series of ‘tasks’ to produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the completion of the work. All the ‘tasks’ must be completed to gain a successful PASS in this assessment. Failure to complete ALL tasks will result in a fail of PORT 1 – if you are unclear on expectations for this assessment please ensure you discuss this with your Programme Director in your weekly workshop sessions. Work to be included in this portfolio is: 1) Completion of the ‘skills survey’ (available at this link – on the Shape Your Future platform). The survey will generate a graph that must be completed. You must upload this along with a 200-word commentary on your reflections on this outcome. 2) Completion of the ‘Shape your future’ e-modules (available at this link) - all 4 skills listed (Communication, Motivation, Adaptability and Problem Solving). These skills have been selected as they mirror the professional competencies required by the main professional bodies for computing and engineering (BCS, IET). • • For each skill successfully completed you will receive a digital badge directly from the platform which must be uploaded into your portfolio (a record of the skills completed by all students will be downloaded to check this is an accurate reflection of your individual efforts). All information to assist you in using the platform is available via Moodle and will be covered in the teaching sessions. 3) Graduate Action Plan. A 500-word personal narrative based around the learning from this module and the following questions: • • • Why did you choose your degree? What career(s) are you considering upon graduation? What steps do you think you need to undertake to achieve this career plan? Word count (or equivalent): 2000-word count equivalent 2 This a reflection of the effort required for the assessment. Word counts will normally include any text, tables, calculations, figures, subtitles and citations. Reference lists and contents of appendices are excluded from the word count. Contents of appendices are not usually considered when determining your final assessment grade. They are a process which provides additional learning and development through the preparation for and completion of the assessment. This module is designed to enable students to develop confidence in academic and professional competencies. It embeds available institutional platforms for digital and professional skills, as well as creating a sense of connection between modules to create a cohesive learning journey. The module focuses on the “orientation of students to increase social and academic engagement, 'connectedness' to university, sense of direction and future career” (Beder, 1997) It offers an opportunity to appreciate the contemporary issues affecting the working environment and understand the need for reflective learning and professional development as relevant for their chosen programme. 5 Marking/Assessment Criteria In order to successfully pass this assessment, all elements of the portfolio must be completed and evidence of all tasks uploaded within it (following the template provided on Moodle under ‘Assessment and Feedback’). Your overall grade will be either a pass or fail for this assessment. However, you will receive an indicative grade for the reflection and graduate action plan. The reflection and graduate action plan will be graded against the following grade band descriptor; Presentation and Communication 80%-100% 70%-79% (1st Class (1st) +) 60%-69% (2:1) 50%-59% (2:2) 40%-49% (3rd) > 39 % Threshold Fail – Learning outcomes not Excellent Very good Good Satisfactory met.
