Read the two passages below carefully and answer the questions under them. Shade the answer space in the answer sheet which bears the same letter as the answer you have chosen. PASSAGE 1 There are different kinds of scientists. There are scientists who study how the stars move. There are those who are interested in agriculture and helping to find ways in which to grow trees. But how does a scientist work? How does he discover things? Well, a scientist spends a lot of time in training. He learns how to observe, to look carefully at what goes on around him. He learns how to experiment and how to write down his results. A good example of a scientist at work is Dr Okafor, who studies and tries to develop different varieties of trees. He has developed a breadfruit which is four feet (1.2m) high above the ground. This variety, as you know, is very different from the tall breadfruit trees that you actually see on the farms. Dr Okafor works with the Forestry Development Investigation Branch of the Forestry Commission in Enugu. He is developing a crop breeding programme in order to produce new and better types of some of our well-known trees such as breadfruit, agbono and pear trees. Many of the new breeds bear more fruits and start producing earlier than the older ones we all know. He has a farm where he plants, experiments, observes and writes down his findings. These findings are very useful to the government, other scientists and the farmers. Choose the best answer for each question. 1. Scientists are trained (a) (b) (c)To (d) To look for facts and record them To reproduce trees be farmers To work in the forest 2. Dr Okafor is an example of: (a) A farmer (b) An observer (c)A person who works with trees (d) A scientist who studies trees. 3. According to the passage, some of the trees being reproduced at the Forestry Commission are: (a) Orange and banana trees (b) Breadfruit and agbono trees (c)Iroko and palm-oil trees (d) Coconut palms and pear trees 4. The trees that are reproduced are: (a) as tall as the parent trees. (b) shorter than the parent trees. (c)the same in all respects to the parent trees. (d) taller than the parent trees. 5. Scientists are supposed to (a) create new and better things than those they have been studying (b) examine things and record their observations. (c) teach or tell others what to do. (d) read about things only. PASSAGE 2 I had heard from many preachers and elders in our area that it is good to give at least part of whatever one has to others especially, those who are in need. They would support this statement by giving many instances that they themselves had experienced or witnessed or that they had heard or read about it. The lesson to be learnt from all the accounts was the same: the more you give, the more you have. I never took them serious because the argument didn’t sound convincing enough to me. Otherwise how could a boy who decided to give out thirty out of the fifty naira he has still have more? More than what would he have? I, therefore, continued to stick to my own belief; the more you give, the less you have. Then it happened one day, about 5.30p.m when two of my childhood friends and fellow boarding house students came to me. They had exhausted their pocket money and all their provisions. They had eaten nothing that day and they had come to me as their last hope. I should assist them with whatever I could give which they would return later in the week after their return from home. The day was Monday and I knew they will not be back in school until Sunday evening. I explained that I myself had hardly enough to last me till Friday afternoon but they pressed harder. I would have lied to them that I had no money on me but it was in their presence that my guardian sent the balance of my pocket money to me. Unable to send them away empty handed, I gave to each of them one hundred naira note, leaving for myself only one hundred and fifty naira. Though my friends were grateful, I was highly disturbed because I knew what I had left would not last me two days. I was in my classroom Tuesday morning thinking more of how I would survive till Sunday than of the lesson in progress when the Principal sent for me. He handed over to me a sum of one thousand, six hundred naira from my parents. I was so happy to even thank the Principal. I collected the money and raced off. 6.
