TELL ME WHO I AM QUESTION AND ANSWER • Are you familiar with those pictures? DO YOU KNOW? • The documented history of sports goes back at least 3,000 years. In the beginning, sports often involved the preparation for war or training as a hunter, which explains why so many early games involved the throwing spears, stakes, and rocks, and sparring one-on-one with opponents. • Team sports, it is a type of sport where the fundamental nature of the game or sport necessitates the participation of multiple individuals working together as a team, and it is inherently impossible or highly impractical to execute the sport as a single- player endeavor. In team sports, the cooperative effort of team members is essential for the sport to function and achieve its objectives. BASKETBALL HISTORY OF BASKETBALL • Basketball began in 1891, it was invented by James Naismith, as being a less injury-prone sport than football. The game became established quite quickly, and it grew very popular into the 20th century. • It first became became popular in America and then branched out to get more popularity in other corners of the world. • The objective of his creation was to throw the basketball into the fruit baskets that were nailed to the lower railing of the gym’s balcony. • Basketball was introduced in France in 1893, in England in 1894, in Australia, China, and India soon thereafter, and in Japan in 1900. FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT IN BASKETBALL The Basketball court • Court Dimensions- The size of the court depends on the playing level. The size of the court for NBA and College games is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for High School and Junior High. • The Backboard and Rim- The regulation height above the ground for the rim (hoop) is 10 feet, and the rim is 18 inches in diameter. Backboards are six feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall, with the inner square being 24 inches wide by 18 inches tall. • The Foul Line- For all size courts the ‘foul line’ is 15 feet in front of the backboard. • Line Markings- All line markings on the floor are two inches wide and can vary in color. • • • • B. BALL C. BASKET D. BACKBOARD SHOES RULES AND REGULATIONS • OFFICIALS: -2 Referees - Score keepers • COACHES: - Responsible for discipline, calling timeouts and substitutions. Playing the game: • Each team begins with 5 players on the court. • 2 forwards (power and small), 2 guards (point and shooting) and a center • The goal of the game is to score more points than the opposing team • The game start with a tip off • Once the team has won the possession of the ball, they have up to 24 seconds to shoot the ball towards the opponent’s basket • The basket are 10 feet above the ground on a court that is generally about 94 ft. long by 50 ft. wide and varies depending on where you play • To move the ball up the court, you can either pass the ball to a teammate or dribble the ball where you bounce the ball up the and down repeatedly whilst in motion. • To score points, a player must shoot the ball into the opponent’s basket • The team gets 2 points for any shoots scored within the arc. • The team gets 3 points for any shoots outside the arc. • Any free throws awarded to a team scores 1 point • Failure to shoot the ball within 24 seconds results in a shot clock violation and the other team will awarded possession of the ball • The opposing team will try to take the ball by either blocking shots, rebounding, a missed shot, or by stealing the ball away VOLLEYBALL HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL • Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Morgan called the sport “mintonette”, until a professor from Springfield College noted the volleying nature of play and proposed the name of “volleyball”. • In 1900, a special ball was designed for the spor. • In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing thee ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced. • In 1920, the United States, Japan and Russia created national volleyball associations. The three hits per side rule was made. The court size changed to 30 feet by 60 feet • In 1928, The United States Volleyball Association was made because more rules were needed and to make tournaments. • In late 1940s, the forearm pass was introduced, before overhead passes were more common. • In 1947, the Federation Internationale De Volleyball (FIDV) was founded • In 1964, Volleyball was introduced to the Olympics in Tokyo. • In 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was formed • In 1984, At the Olympics in Los Angeles, American men and women took gold and silver medals for volleyball. • In 1986, the Women’s Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA) was formed. • In 1988, the US Men repeated the Gold in the Olympics in Korea. • In 1990, the World League was created. • In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old VOLLEYBALL EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES • • • • • • • Volleyball Court Dimensions Center Line Attack Line Service Line Ball Net Pole Volleyball Court Dimension VOLLEYBALL RULES AND REGULATION • THE SERVE - Server must serve from behind the restraining line (end line) until after contact. - Ball may be served underhand oe overhand - Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve. The serve (2) • Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point. • First game serve is determined by a volley, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser. • Serve must be returned by a bumped only. No setting or attacking a serve. SCORING • Rally scoring will be used. • There will be a point scored on every score of the ball. • Offense will score on a defense miss orf out of bounds hit. • Defense will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve intgo the net. • Game will be played to 25 pts. • Must win by 2 points. ROTATION • (A) Team will rotate each time they win the serve. • (B) Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner. • (C) There shall be 6 players on each side. PLAYING THE GAME (VOLLEY) • Maximum of three hits per side. • Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is not considered a hit.) • Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve. • A ball touching a boundary line is good. • A player must not block or attack a serve. • A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest. • If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play. • Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players. (After the serve only) BASIC VIOLATIONS • Stepping on or over the line on a serve. • Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully. • Hitting the ball illegally (Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc.) • Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player , no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play. • Reaching over the net, except under these conditions: • 1- When executing a follow-through • 2- When blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is being returned (the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third play. • Reaches under the net (if it interferes with the ball or opposing player). • Failure to serve in the correct order. • Blocks or spikes from a position which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in a back row position. SOFTBALL HISTORY OF SOFTBALL • Softball began in 1887 when George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented “indoor baseball”. By thed spring of 1888, the game had spread outdoors. It was originally called either mushball, kittenball or indoor baseball, but by the 1920s it had acquired the name of softball. • The sport became organised in the United States in 1993 with the formation of the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA). The sport was originally played by men and did not become popular with women until the formation of the ASA. SOFTBALL EQUIPMENT • • • • BALL GLOVE/MITT BAT BATTING HELMET SOFTBALL RULES AND REGULATIONS • Before pitching the pitcher shall stand firmly on the ground and one or both feet should touch the pitcher plate. • The pitcher is not allowed to stop or bounce the ball in pitching position as it may prevent the batsman from hitting the ball. • The pitcher cannot use any kind of tape on the ball. To dry hands he can use powder resin under umpire’s supervision. • The pitch delivery shall be in an arc of six to ten feet • No Pitch is decleared in the following cases • The ball is pitched during suspension of the game. • The runner leaves the base soon • The return pitch is made quickly • The ball slips from pitcher’s hand • The pitching arc is less than six or more than ten feet • The batting team has to bat in the order given in the scoresheet. • The batsman is not allowed to prevent the catcher from catching the ball. • A player is suspended for the current season if he or she is involved in a fight. • If a player misbehaves with an umpire or pushes, he is ejected from the game. • A full match consists of seven innings. • A game is complicated before seven innings in the following cases • A team is ahead by 20 runs in the third innings • A team is ahead by 15 runs in the fourth innings • A team is ahead by 10 runs in the fifth innings • If the home team is ahead and one of the above conditions is met • The full duration of the game is 50 minutes. • Each team has to provide a scorekeeper. • Bats and balls are provided to the customers but they have to bring their gloves. • The runners can leave the base after the batsman has hit the ball. • Artificial noise makers are not allowed.
