Portfolio Assessment
The purpose of this assignment is for you to document your growing understanding of
language use in three domains: personal/community, academic and professional.
For this assessment, you will complete weekly portfolio tasks, and reflect on your experience
of these tasks and on what you have learned as a result.
This final assessment brings together your responses to the weekly tasks in one portfolio.
The assessment has three parts:
Part 1: Weekly portfolio tasks
Each topic in this unit turns your attention to the way people use language in different
cultural and social contexts. For each topic:
Complete the weekly portfolio task. If relevant to the task, you can illustrate it with an image
e.g. photograph, diagram, drawing.
Write a short, one-paragraph reflection of your experience undertaking the portfolio task
and what you learned. Post your paragraph to the 'Portfolio task forum' for each topic as
directed and comment on the posts of fellow students.
Part 2: Preparing a portfolio
At the end of the trimester, combine your completed weekly portfolio tasks into a
professionally presented multimodal portfolio. (See file: Assessment 3_Weekly portfolio
tasks for a checklist of completed texts to include).
Part 3: Essay (1000 words)
Write an essay in response to this question:
How does language and image use vary in personal/community, academic and
professional domains?
In your essay, support your ideas with references to readings and give specific
examples from your portfolio tasks to illustrate your points.

Paragraph 1

Explain how language and image are used in professional contexts. Support
your points with reference to readings and give specific examples from your
portfolio tasks to illustrate your points.
Paragraph 5
(Conclusion)
Summarise how language use differs in the three domains. Comment on the
value of this knowledge and understanding for your own language and
literacy goals in personal, community, academic and professional contexts.
Reference list
List your references in alphabetical order according to author surname. Use
APA style.

MARKING CRITERIA
Part 1: Completing weekly tasks (10%)
1. Shares reflection on experiences and new learning in relation to each weekly portfolio
task with fellow students and lecturers on the discussion forum.
Part 2: Portfolio (40%)
2. Compiles the seven weekly tasks into a professional portfolio of language and image use.

Part 3: Essay (50%)
3. The introduction introduces a claim about how about how language and image use varies

8. Provides evidence of engagement with lectures, topic notes and readings. (4%)
9. Uses APA 7th edition referencing conventions effectively (i.e. in-text referencing and
reference list). (4%).
10. Uses conventions of scholarly writing effectively, including: well-structured, purposeful
text; cohesive paragraphs; well-structured sentences; vocabulary that demonstrates
knowledge of the assessable content; accurate spelling and punctuation; professional
presentation. (7%)
SUBMISSION
Compile your multimodal portfolio (Part 2) and essay (Part 3) and save as one (1) pdf file.
Any Topic 5 presentation (ppt/pptx/ppts) or video files (mp4) can be uploaded separately.
