Grade 10 • Unit 7 Global Health Initiatives Health MAPEH Practical Applications The knowledge gained in this unit can be applied to the following: ● taking actions in promoting global health initiatives toward the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ● determining the issues in implementing global health initiatives ● identifying ways of adopting global health initiatives in a local or national context 2 Central Question How can the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals help improve the lifestyle of the people? 3 Lesson 1 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Health MAPEH 4 Learning Targets At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to do the following: ● Identify the different Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). ● Demonstrate an understanding of the MDGs. ● Describe the MDGs. 5 Recharge 6 Recharge Instructions 1. Observe the following pictures relating to the MDGs. 2. Identify the meaning of the pictures and write a word to describe each. 3. Pass the chalk to a classmate and let him or her identify another word about one of the given pictures. 4. United Nations 9 Enlighten The eight MDGs were crafted for the betterment of the health and wellness of people in developing countries. 10 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global communities from the United Nations (UN) summit created a historic commitment to eliminate extreme poverty and improve the health and wellness of people in impoverished countries. This commitment is known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The long-term strategy was intended to be finished after 15 years from its inception. 11 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Eradicate extreme poverty hunger. Purpose: ● decrease poverty in poor developing countries ● achieve decent employment livelihood for women, men, young people and and and and 12 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Achieve universal primary education. Purpose: ● increase literacy rate ● guarantee all children can complete a full course of primary education in schools by 2015 13 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Promote gender equality and empower women. Purpose: ● respect gender and women’s rights ● abolish gender inequality in work and education 14 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Reduce child mortality rate. Purpose: ● reduce the mortality rate by at least 63 percent ● reduce the under-five mortality rate 15 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Improve maternal health. Purpose: ● reduce the death rate of mothers after childbirth ● provide universal access to reproductive health programs 16 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. Purpose: ● prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS ● provide universal access to the treatment of HIV/AIDS ● decrease the incidents of malaria and other major diseases 17 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Ensure environmental sustainability. Purpose: ● reverse the loss of environmental resources due to human activities ● reduce biodiversity loss ● provide access to safe drinking water and sanitation ● promote environmental health 18 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Develop a global partnership for development. Purpose: ● express the special needs of least developed and developing countries ● promote the availability of technology, information, and communication 19 Recharge Enlighten Activity Processing 1.
