The dystopian novel N. 2 1. For most of the 19th century writers, utopia was linked to the future, the culmination of the historical evolution, consequence of the progressive tendencies of modern times, as democracy, science and socialism. 2. Utopia Positive side of things Accolade of modernity A perfect and morally right social order (Ideal society) Principles that lead to delight Dystopia Negative side of things (the blackest picture possible) Revolt against modernity Dreadful perfection of society (the victory of tyranny) Principles that lead to horror 3. America and Soviet Union inspired the minds of the 1930s and 1940s writers and thinkers, who took inspiration from their society, for example Aldous Huxley recreated in his work of the American society sunk in consumerism. Another example is George Orwell, who talks about the failure of a socialist utopian society in the Soviet Union. 4. During the 1950s, the idea of utopia changed and from now on, science and technology played a major role, while the main concept of the new dystopian conception was the fear about nuclear war, here the main feeling, that was spread, was horror of the present and the future. N. 3 Nowadays, there are a lot of tv series, films and books, which took as inspiration dystopian ideas, for example some famous tv series are: Black Mirror, the 100, Altered Carbon, The rain and others. All this are set in an alternative universe, which is the complete opposite of our society or the exaggeration of all the flaws of out society. Some examples of films, that I’ve seen are The Divergent series, Hunger gams, which are all set in a world where tyranny has taken control over the world, where people have no more freedom and they have to live following extreme rules. An example of a dystopian book I read is Maze runner, which is a book based on this group of teenagers who are locked up in a labyrinth, where lots of strange things happen and they have to fight in order to survive. As far as I can say, these kind of genre has been so popular during the 20th and 21st century because, lots of people search a way to run away from their present and future life, maybe because they afraid of living, of what could happen to them, so they took these imaginative worlds as a refuge, and they convince themselves that this kind of life exists only in films, tv series and books and not in reality, so they create their own bubble to live in, in order to outrun themselves from reality.
