Its Importance and Significance in the Educative Process ROMA M. RIVERA Resource Speaker Understand the parameters of a successful parental Understand involvement. Explain OBJECTIVES: At the end of the session, you are expected to: Know Analyze Explain the importance and significance of parental involvement in the educative process. Know the six important factors of Parental involvement Analyze the three determinants of Parental Involvement Parental involvement refers to a situation where parents are directly involved in the education of their children. What is Parental Involvement? They involve themselves and are involved by the school and teachers in the learning process of their children, and they fulfil their duties as parents in making sure that the learner is assisted in the process of learning as much as they possibly can. It does not just refer to parents enquiring about the performance of a learner in schools, but also in them taking a role in communicating with their children with the aim of having a healthy relationship with them, so that the process of encouraging, mentoring, leading and inspiring may be genuine Importance and Significance of Parental Involvement parental involvement is a significant element in education and can also be achieved through homebased parental involvement like listening to the child as they read, helping them in completing their homework as well as school-based activities, which include attending parents meeting and education workshops. Seeing parents involved in the education of their children is a good thing because it improves academic performance. Learners become more focused in their school work. This motivates learners not to give up easily when they do not understand a particular topic and will not bunk classes because they know that their parents are always monitoring their school attendance Importance and Significance of Parental Involvement Learners whose parents are involved, are active and ready to learn, they learn to be punctual from young age, they learn to be persistent as the parents would be continuously enquiring about their progress and they would not want to disappoint them. Taking responsibility becomes a part of the nature of such children as they plan ahead and are able to do their work according to their schedule, which is the quality of being organized. Through this parents can to make sure that their children succeed in school According to Labahn (1995) parents are within their rights by insisting that children focus on their school work, because some children are lazy and come up with meaningless excuses in order to avoid doing their school work. Importance and Significance of Parental Involvement Other benefits include those that are highlighted by Lemmer (2007:218) which include improved self-esteem, high rate of school attendance and positive social behaviour. Sivertsen (2015) adds that parental involvement is linked to improved behaviour, low levels of absenteeism and optimistic attitudes. Importance and Significance of Parental Involvement based on further studies Parent involvement in education is crucial. No matter their income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school. The most accurate predictors of student achievement in school are not family income or social status, but the extent to which the family creates a home environment that encourages learning, communicates high yet reasonable expectations for the child’s achievement, and becomes involved in the child’s education at school. When parents are involved at school, the performance of all the children at school, not just their own, tends to improve. The more comprehensive and well planned the partnership between school and home, the the student achievement. higher Benefits Sending clear signals to students about the value of education Ensuring school decisions are broadly representative of the school community Ensuring school activities and actions are respectful and representative of local cultures Building mutual commitment by families to take action in the home that supports learning at school Enabling teachers and school leaders to access expertise and perspectives that support curriculum Successful Parental Involvement parental involvement can only be successful if there is an effort to ensure effective participation of parents in school activities, which includes helping learners with homework, discussing learners' behaviour with teachers, motivating learners and communicating their child performance to name a few. Parenting Communicating Volunteering SIX IMPORTANT FACTORS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Learning from Home Decision Making Collaborating with the community Parenting includes all of the activities that parents engage in to raise happy, healthy children who become capable students. Unlike teachers, whose influence on a child’s is relatively limited, parents maintain a life-long commitment to their children. Activities that support this type of involvement provide information to parents about their child’s development, health, safety, or home conditions that can support student learning. Includes: parent education and other courses or training for parents, family support programmes to assist families with health, nutrition, and other services, home visits at transition points to elementary, middle, and secondary school Communicating Families and schools communicate with each other in multiple ways. Schools send home notes and flyers about important events and activities. Parents give teachers information about their child’s health and educational history. A school website is an additional mode of communication with parents and families. Includes: conferences with every parent at least once a year, regular schedule of useful notices, memos, phone calls, newsletters, and other communications Volunteering applies to recruiting and organizing help and support from parents for school programmes and students’ activities. There are three basic ways that individuals volunteer in education. First, they may volunteer in the school or classroom by helping teachers and adminstrators as tutors or assistants. Second, they may volunteer for the school; for instance, fundraising for an event or promoting a school in the community. Finally, they may volunteer as a member of an audience, attending school programmes or performances. Learning at Home pertains to providing ideas and information to parents about how they can best assist their children with homework and curricular-related decisions and activities. Parents helping their children with homework or taking them to a museum, are examples of this type of involvement. These activities produce a school-oriented family and encourage parents to interact with the school curriculum. Activities to encourage learning at home provide parents with information on what children are doing in the classroom and how to help them with homework. Decision Making refers to including parents in school decisions and to developing parent leaders and representatives. Parents participate in school decision making when they become part of school governance committees or join organizations, such as the parent/teachers association. Other decision making activities include taking on leadership roles that involve disseminating information to other parents. Collaborating with Community pertains to identifying and integrating communities’’ services and resources to support and strengthen schools, students, and their families. DETERMINANTS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parental Aspirations - refer to idealistic hopes or goals that parents may form regarding future attainment. Parents who hold high aspirations for their children’s future are likely to be more willing to exert efforts to ensure that those aspirations are realized. Indeed, evidence from research suggests that educational and occupational aspirations are associated with the ways in which parents shape children’s activities, time, and learning environment (Murphey, 1992 DETERMINANTS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Parenting Self-Efficacy - The construct of self-efficacy refers to “beliefs in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to produce given attainments” (Bandura, 1997, p. 3). Research conducted in a variety of countries finds that individuals with high self-efficacy in a specific area exert effort in that area, persevere in the face of difficulty, and respond resiliently to adversity (Bandura, 2002). They are less prone to self-defeating thought patterns, and they experience less stress and depression than those with lower self-efficacy. The construct of self-efficacy is intended to be domain specific; particular experiences with respect to a given domain affect the individual’s sense of confidence about acting effica.ciously in that domain DETERMINANTS OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT Perceptions of the School – Parents’ degree of involvement is likely to be affected by the school itself. If teachers appear to care about the welfare of the child, communicate respect for parents, and develop effective means of communicating with families, parents are more willing and able to become involved in their children’s schooling (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1997). Conclusion Parental involvement is associated with a wide range of positive child outcomes in primary and high schools, such as good academic skills, positive attitudes and social competence (Lau, Li & Rao, 2011:97). Parental involvement in learning acts as a gel that helps to make learning for children pleasant and encourages them to work even more as they seek to make those closest to them proud. Activity 1: Reflect on the following questions. You have 10 minutes to answer. Of the SIX important factors of parent's involvement, which have you done/accomplished? What made it succeed or failed? Of the three determinants of parent's involvement, which do you think could you make full use of so as to influence parents to be more involve with their child's education? How will you do it? Take a photo of your notes/answer. Send it to our ICT leader. Presentation of Reflections Thank you for listening! Let's think of a simple actions that we could take to enhance our relationship with our dear parents.
