1. Aims and objectives
- The aim of the experiment/Research is to synthesize zinc ferrate nanoparticles
- To learn about the properties and use of zinc ferrate and other kinds of
nanoparticles
- To acquaint Students with presenting and Research Skills
2. Introduction
Zinc ferrites are a series of synthetic inorganic compounds of Zn and Fe, having the
general formula of ZnxFe3-xO4. They can be prepared by reacting Fe oxides
(FexOy) and ZnO at high temperatures [1].
Recent studies have shown that zinc ferrite, which is paramagnetic in bulk form,
becomes ferromagnetic in nano-crystalline thin film format .
Zinc ferrites are a series of synthetic inorganic compounds of zinc and
iron (ferrite) with the general formula of ZnxFe3−xO4. Zinc ferrite compounds can be
prepared by aging solutions of Zn(NO3)2, Fe(NO3)3, and triethanolamine in the
presence and in the absence of hydrazine, or reacting iron oxides and zinc oxide at
high temperature [2]

Balanced chemical equation
ZnCl2 + 2FeCl3.6H2O + 8NaOH  ZnFe2O4 + 8NaCl + 16H2O
Mole of ZnCl2 = 0.0125 mol And mole of FeCl3.6H2O = 0.0125 mol
ZnCl2Is the limiting reagent
Since the limiting reagent is ZnCl2 and they are in the 1:1 ratio then the number of moles of
ZnFe2O4 is the same (0.0125 mol)
Theoretical yield = moles × molar mass
= 0.0125 mol × 241.0966 g/mol
= 3.0137g
Expected color of compound = redish brown

Ferrites are compounds composed of oxides of Iron and one or more other metals in
chemical combination. A ferrite is has a chemical formula M(FexOy) where M represent any
metal

- Ferrites are ferri magnetic ceramic compounds which are derived from Iron oxide.

- They are used in electronic industry for making high frequency inductors and
transformers. They are used in microwave circuitry and also used in the television
industry where large tonnages were used for the deflection of the n TV tube deflection
yokes and the high voltage flyback transformers.
c) Ferric chloride also reacts with sodium hydroxide; give the 2 balanced equations of
this reaction in the right order
- FeCl3 + 3NaOH → Fe(OH)3 + 3NaCl
