Week 12 Discussion
Linguistic anthropology has reshaped my perspective on communication and human
interaction. Learning about the intricacies of language has allowed me to navigate my life with
an understanding of linguistic diversity and its societal effects. Firstly, it's taught me to embrace
different English variations without subconscious judgment. Learning that dialects stem from
cultural heritage and community has shaped my appreciation. I rewired my brain, providing a
mindset that allows me to create deeper human connections without subconscious discrimination.
It allows me to communicate effectively and respectfully across linguistic backgrounds in my
future career. Linguistic anthropology has also refined my approach to learning new languages.
The three-step learning process has become my new strategy, from learning the language's
sounds to its lexicon and syntax. This method provided me with a digestible, easy-to-understand
plan that has motivated me to learn new languages. The concept of speech acts has been another
eye-opener. It's made me acutely aware of how my words impact others. I knew that language
isn't only a means of conversation but a tool for shaping social interactions and relationships.
This awareness will be invaluable in my future life, guiding me to communicate thoughtfully,
navigate conflicts, and build meaningful connections. Linguistic anthropology has affected my
life outside the classroom, shaping how I perceive, engage with, and contribute to the world
beyond university settings. It's provided me with a cultural lens through which I navigate diverse
landscapes, fostering empathy, effective communication, and a profound respect for the
intricacies of human expression.
