Inter-Ls210 - Choose A Career Community.

● The first career community I picked is “Government, Policy, International Affairs
& Law”. This community involves a vast variety of jobs such as positions in the
government which include working in the finance ministry, or working in
government administration as well as being a part of international for profit and
nonprofit organizations such as The World Health Organization. It is also a
community where jobs allow a person to not only represent their respective career
fields, but also highlight their country and roots.
As an economics major, Public Policy is something that is talked about a lot in
class and also something I have always been interested in since I was in the student
government in my highschool. As someone who has also volunteered with a large
number of organizations, specifically one volunteering experience with a
government hospital where I coordinated the covid vaccine program as one of the
student leads during the pandemic, I believe this career community is something I
have experience in before.
To answer the second question, Emmeline is the success works advisor for this
career community. It’s possible to book appointments with her through starfish.
Moving onto the third question, classes such as PS 104 which is introduction to
American politics and government as well as PS 363 which is literature and
politics. I believe 104 would be a good fit in the sense that it would create a
foundation for the careers that involve this community whereas PS 363 personally
speaks to me as I have a fascination for literature and I believe certain books such
as Charles Dickens hard times showcase societies that represent what can happen
when policy making goes wrong in a large society through realistic fiction.
As for on campus opportunities that relate to this community, I believe all
leadership positions on all campus can help develop skills for this community as
anyone who is in Government and Policy making needs to be a good leader with a
strong sense of direction in terms of decision making but to be more specific
debate club and MUN club might be a good idea as they help develop both
networking and public speaking skills.
The skills involved in this career community are vast which is reflected by the
sample resume, but as I mentioned before, my experience with my high school’s
student government might be a good point to highlight when talking about this
career community. Besides this, I am the founder CEO of a book reading platform
called “That One Book Club”. As experiences such as these show leadership
qualities in a big platform which involves dealing with a large number of people, I
think it showcases that I possess a competitive skill set required for this career
community.
● Moving onto the second career community, I picked “Technology, Data and
Analytics”. In 2023, the world is largely driven by analysis of big data. With the
rise of computer science and data science as the leading majors globally, it's no
surprise that job opportunities in this field are lucrative. As someone who likes
human resources, analysis based on data and technology is something that I
believe will be beneficial to add to my list of skills, thus I am interested in this
field.
There are two advisors for this career community, Beth and Hao and one of the
courses they recommend to students is LIS 461 which is Data Algorithms : Ethics
and Policy. This class is a tech class that focuses on the theoretical ethical side of
the tech industry instead of being primarily focused on statistics or coding. This is
recommended as a good class for students, regardless of whether they are a tech
based major or not. Another class recommended is CS200. This is a very basic
level coding class that allows students to have a taste of what higher coding and
analytic classes might involve. Even if students don’t continue with further classes
based on coding, CS200 will allow them to learn a new skill which can be added
to the resume.
One of the main organizations that come to mind is, “Girls Who Code”. Not only
do they provide a space to study together, they also create a welcoming
environment and allows women to begin creating a strong support system in an
industry that is very heavily male dominated. There is also AI@UW which is a
community that focuses more towards the love of learning, understanding,
implementing and developing artificial intelligence at UW Madison. It is a
relatively newer organization but with the increased interest in AI world-wide, it's
a rising community at UW Madison.
As careers based on technology are one of the most lucrative and sought after jobs
in the current market, it is not a surprise that there are multiple resumes to look
into in this career community’s webpage. Answering the last question, one of
skills I have that match is the Data Science Intern position. I worked in a big
pharma company in marketing and data analytics in the summer of 2023 where I
focused on big data analytics in the international pharma sector alongside how that
data impacts the human resources aspect of the company due to changes in profit
targets.
● I believe the first career community might be better for me. “Government, Policy,
International Affairs & Law” is not only something I am interested in, but also
something I believe I have a passion and niche for. Often labeled as a “people
person” and “extensively extroverted”, I believe I have the natural capacity that is
required for jobs that involve being in the public spotlight a lot. Besides this, while
growing up, I have been constantly taught about ethics, morals and the importance
of making positive changes in my surroundings. I believe in jobs such as the ones
in this career community, I will be able to undertake tasks that might result in an
improved lifestyle and increase wellbeing for all.
● As an avid reader of "The Economist”, I picked this news source even though it is
given as one of the examples. I began reading “The Economist” as a kid going into
highschool. Macroeconomics and the big picture aspect of global policies and
trade has always been a topic I have been interested in. I even wrote a paper on the
economical impact of large-scale celebratory events such as the Fifa World Cup
for my economics class in my freshman year of college. This idea came to me
while reading an article of the financial aspects of such events in one of The
Economist’s articles and how instead of generating profit, there is actual significant
accounting loss while hosting such events, but there are underlying economical
benefits in the long run. . As one of the most trusted sources, “The Economist ''
stands as a brand that hardly reports biased reviews and opinions as well as speaks
openly about economic liberalism which is what is in focus on the global economy
today. Besides this, the Economist is also known for being reliable as their fact
checking methods and copyediting is considered to be one of the best amongst
news articles.
