We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks The poem describes a group of teenagers hanging out outside of a pool hall. This is a poem about rebellion and the cost of rebellion. In the poem the group of teenagers show themselves to be skipping school staying out late and drinking, it implies that the cost of rebellion and “living fast” is death. The name of the pool hall that they are suggests that its a dangerous yet enticing place “The Golden Shovel” Its golden and elegant yet there's a shovel mainly used to dig graves. In this poem “school’’ is a symbol for authority that they're rebelling against. [you fit into me] by Maragaret Atwood “You Fit Into Me” by Margaret Atwood is a short poem that shows the pain that comes with love. The poet uses a simile “you fit into me like a hook into an eye” to show how two people connect like they were made for each other. Then the poet adds a twist and shows how painful and damaging the connection is. In the poem “a fish hook” and “an open eye” are used to describe what fits but it shows that although they fit at first it doesn't mean they are supposed to be together. This poem is about love, pain and the danger in relationships. Ode to My Socks by Pablo Neruda In this poem the speaker tells us how his friend, Maru Mori, hand made him a pair of socks. This poem is telling us that in order to fully appreciate something you have to use it first. The socks were described to be “as soft as rabbits” and his feet seemed unfit for the sock like “two long sharks sea blue and shot through” but he still wore them because that was how he could truly value them. After he puts on the socks he comes to realize that it is actually the warmth that the socks bring that makes it good.
