UNIT R052 SAMPLE LEARNER WORK WITH COMMENTARY
INTRODUCTION
This is a guide for teachers so that you can see how we would mark work, Cambridge Nationals are designed to give the students
the project and let them create the work.
The guide contains sample learner work for this unit and covers all learning objectives, graded at Marking Band 1 (MB1) and Marking
Band 3 (MB3).
The accompanying commentary explains why each piece of work was awarded its grade.
For MB1 graded work, additional guidance has been added to suggest improvements that could be made to make it an MB2 graded
piece of work.
For MB3 graded work, additional guidance has been added to explain why it was awarded that grade and not the lower grade of MB2.
You MUST NOT allow your learners to copy the samples contained in this guide. OCR moderators have been advised to report
any copying, in whole or in part. Misuse of these samples will lead to a malpractice investigation being conducted and would
put all submitted learner work at risk of investigation.

MB3
Henry has just started to learn to play table tennis. He can keep a rally going on the backhand
side. He has difficulty doing a forehand and keeping the ball on the table.
Henry can do a backhand serve and consistently get the ball in. However, he is not able to get
his forehand serve on the table with any consistency.
Henry knows where to stand when receiving serve and can usually return the serve, however,
often when the ball is returned he does not react quickly enough to be able to return it on the
table, therefore he lacks accuracy and fluency.
As his better stroke is his backhand he is rather restricted on his options when it comes to
strategies to outwit his opponent and this affects his decision making as until he improves his
forehand he is very restricted.
He enjoys limited consistency with his technique.
His movement around court could be improved.
Henry is able to perform the backhand and backhand serve reasonably well and he knows
where to stand when receiving a serve this is why he has been awarded a 6.

The centre provided a witness statement which detailed the learner’s use of skills and techniques in table tennis. The information
given demonstrates limited application of skills and techniques by the learner in table tennis. It details what skills the learner is
able to perform and at what level. It details what skills the learner has difficulty in performing and states that he lacks accuracy and
fluency. It states that because of his limited ability to perform certain strokes it affects his strategies and decision making. It also
states that he is inconsistent. The centre has awarded him a mark of 6 this is because although he has problems with some skills he
has shown he can perform a backhand and backhand serve consistently.
Suggested improvements to progress sample learner work to MB2
The centre would again be expected to provide a witness statement. The witness statement would need to detail the skills and
techniques that the learner was able to affectively apply and say what the skills are and how the learner applied them. The witness
statement would also need to detail how the learner used tactics/strategies/compositional ideas when playing the game detailing
exactly what the learner did in order to try to win the game. How accurately and fluently these were demonstrated needs to be
documented. Finally there needs to be a statement on how the learner is able to consistently maintain performance.

Henry is able to dribble the ball with his right foot well. His ball control with his right foot when
passing is good. His downfall is his dribbling and ball control with his left foot as these skills are
poor and lack accuracy.
Henry plays as a defender in small sided games where he can demonstrate limited skills. He
does not have skills to make an impact when playing a full sided game.
When he is playing the game he knows that in order to help his team when playing as a
defender he should keep between the opposing forwards and the goal so that he is helping his
team prevent the other team from scoring. He tries to do this but not always successfully.
Henry is not afraid to tackle however often his tackle is late. Henry plays the game very simply
and will clear the ball from the danger areas when possible.
To improve performance Henry needs to improve his passing and his distribution.
Henry communicates well with his team mates and they encourage him.
Henry shows limited application of skills. He lacks accuracy and fluency.

Henry knows the rules and the main regulations of the game of football. He acted as a linesman
on several occasions and was able to keep up with play and use the appropriate hand signals for
offside and when the ball went out he indicated which team should take the throw in, however
he was hesitant when doing this and had to be reminded to indicate his decision.
Although Henry knows the rules he was not very confident when it came to referring the game.
He was not very communicative and was very hesitant when blowing the whistle and making
decisions. Although he was watching play he did not always blow the whistle when a foul was
committed, This meant he showed limited accuracy and consistency.
He did not check to see that the players were all wearing shin pads which he was told he
needed to do on all occasions and one of the others in the group reminded him to do it.
Henry can be hesitant. He can apply rules in simple situations.

Tackling
weakness
I am going to plan some practices which I can do to improve my skills.
Practice for passing 1 – you have a group of 5 people and 1 stands in the middle with the other 4 people standing round
you in a circle. The 4 people in the circle pass to the person in the middle and he passes back to them. This needs to be
done for 2 minutes with the right foot and 2 minutes with the left foot.
Practice for passing 2 – you have 2 cones about 3 metres apart and you have 4 people 2 behind 2. The first person passes
the ball to the person opposite them then runs behind the other person at his end the person at the other end passes back
to the new player and this continues. This is done for 2 minutes.
Practice for passing 3 – you have 2 cones about 3 metres apart opposite each other about 6 meters apart. There are 4
people 2 v 2 and the people play against each other passing to get the ball to the other goal.
Practice for Dribbling 1 – you have 2 cones about 3 metres apart and you have 4 people 2 behind 2. The first person
dribbles the ball to the person opposite them then stays at that end. The next person dribbles the ball to the other end
and passes it to the next person in line he then dribbles to the next player and this continues. This needs to be done for 2
minutes with the right foot and 2 minutes with the left foot.
Practice for Dribbling 2 - you have a line of 6 cones spaced 1 metre apart. You have a line of 3 people and they take it in
turns to dribble through the cones. This is done for 2 minutes.
I would measure improvement by getting my teacher to watch me play a game of football and see if he thinks that I have
improved.

Henry provided a basic review of his performance in football he has not listed many skills related
to football.
He identified his strengths and weaknesses but did not include a wide range of skills.
The five practices he has described focus on two skills and in two of the skills he only practices
with his right foot – he should be practicing all skills with both feet as the left foot is his weaker.
He showed a limited understanding in measuring improvement by just asking the teacher to
look at his performance.

The learner has provided a basic review of his performance he has listed a few skills and stated whether or not they are strengths
or weaknesses. He has described 5 practices he would do to improve his skills. He has only focused on 2 skills rather than the 3
weaknesses he identified. He has mentioned using his left foot for some of the practices but not all. He has not stated what types
of skills they are; what types of practices they are and no comments have been made on the methods used. His section on how he
would measure improvement is very brief and limited. A witness statement accompanies the work. The centre has awarded him a
mark of 5 as the information provided is very brief. However, his practices are progressive.
Suggested improvements to progress sample learner work to MB2
More skills need to be listed and identified as strengths and weaknesses. The practices described need to state what types of skills
they are; what types of practices they are and there needs to be comments made on the methods used. The practices need to be
described in more detail. There needs to be more information on how improvement can be measured and what affect that will have
on the team.

Lowther has demonstrated advanced skills in Badminton. He is able to perform a wide range of
skills and techniques when he plays all of his shots in badminton
Lowther is able to perform the low serve effectively as it lands just over the net and forces the
opponent to do a high clear. He is able to perform the high serve well as it lands near the back
of the court, however, this is not always as consistent as the low serve. Lowther can also serve
the backhand low serve effectively and this is an advanced skill.
Lowther is able to perform the high clear effectively making his opponent back track. He is able
to perform net shots effectively and uses this shot when playing against an opponent to bring
the opponent to the net and then is able to do an overhead clear.
When playing a game of singles Lowther knows where to stand to receive serve and when he has
returned serve he moves to the centre of the court so that he is ready to receive the next shot.
When playing a game if he does play a bad shot he reassesses the situation and remains
composed. This also demonstrates his ability to make decisions during his performance. He is
able to maintain his own performance by not getting flustered if a shot is poor. He just readjusts
his position and continues on.
Lowther’s play shows accuracy and fluency when he is playing against someone who is of a
lesser standard as he can beat the majority of his classmates with ease. He is able to select the
correct shot to enable him to move his opponent out of position e.g. net shot when opponent
is at the back of the court; shuttlecock to the right if the opponent is on the far left hand side;
performs a smash when the opponent has sent him a overheard shot. When he has to play
someone of a higher standard he is not always as accurate as he has to think more about what
he is doing. This will improve as he plays more against players of a higher standard. Lowther
shows accuracy and fluency on most occasions.

Lowther has participated well in all football sessions and shows advanced application of most
of the skills he performs. He is a team player and focuses on helping his team perform to a high
standard so that they can win games. He is confident in his own ability when performing skills
in a competitive situation. For example he has the confidence to use his dribbling skills to take
on an opponent. Lowther plays as a forward so his aim is to score goals or assist team mates
when possible so that they can score. He is able to do this as he has an awareness of where his
fellow players are and often passes the ball to someone who is in a better position than him so
that they can score.
Lowther has a wide range of skills which he is able to perform consistently; however, his heading
ability particularly when waiting for a ball to come in from a corner is not always accurate. If the
ball comes to him on a rebound he is able to score but he often mistimes headers.
He plays for the school and a local football club. His creativity is reflected here by his decision
making as to whether or not to pass the ball to another attacker or keep the ball himself and
try and score. He has proved to be a very proficient attacker. This also reflects his ability to use
appropriate tactics. Communication is important and he is able to communicate with his fellow
forward(s) and midfielders.
He is aware of a variety of tactical concepts but his decision making when moving from behind
the centre line coming forward can be poor at times as he is so keen to move up the pitch he
can often get into an offside position, however, this is his only weakness with regard to tactics.
He performs advanced skills well as he has the ability to dribble past a defender and is able to
use his right and left foot, although the left foot is not as good as his right foot. He is able to
accurately pass to members of his team.

AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT/GENERAL COMMENTS
To improve his strategies Lowther needs to concentrate on keeping onside when attacking. He also needs to
improve his heading of the ball as this is a skill that needs improving particularly near goal.
For these reasons I have not allocated him a higher mark.
RECORD OF QUESTIONS/ANSWERS
ASSESSOR QUESTION 1
How do you perform a defensive header rather than an attacking one?
LEARNER RESPONSE 1
To clear the ball I would get under the ball and head the ball up in the air looking for distance whereas if I was
trying to score I would try and get over the ball and head it down.
ASSESSOR QUESTION 2
If the full back overlaps to put in a cross but the ball is cleared what would you do to help him out?
LEARNER RESPONSE 2
I would help him out by dropping back and covering his position and his player until he manages to get back
and do his defensive role.
ASSESSOR QUESTION 3
You are one on one with a defender using your decision making skills what could you do to beat him?
LEARNER RESPONSE 3
First I would look for a 1-2 with one of my team mates but if this wasn’t available I would try and use a skill to
beat him. Some examples are step overs, nutmeg him, Cruff turn or simply knock the ball past him and sprint
after it.

Lowther has been officiating for the last year. He started off officiating in the PE lessons then
he progressed to Inter House football matches and he has now taken an FA referees course and
now officiates at Inter-School matches for the U14 side.
Throughout this time he has grown in confidence and now officiates demonstrating good
communication and using hand signals clearly. He has a good knowledge of the rules and
regulations and is very confident when acting as a lineman where he indicates which side
should have the throw in and also when a player is offside. He has applied the rules to a
complex situation when he has been involved as a linesman in discussing with the referee
whether or not a penalty should be awarded when a player has been fouled on the inner edge
of the penalty box.
When Lowther is the main referee in PE lessons and Inter-House match he is competent and
demonstrates advanced officiating skills. He is able to judge whether or not someone is diving in
the penalty area. He is also able to judge whether or not a player is injured and requires treatment.
When he is the main referee in the U14 league he can sometimes be a little hesitant and does
not always keep up with the play. This is the reason he has not been awarded a higher mark.
Lowther always checks that the players have shin pads on; that they are wearing the correct
studs for the surface they are playing on and that they are not wearing jewellery.
He needs to remember to check the goal posts and nets before the start of all games.
Lowther is aware of the necessity of keeping up with play when he is refereeing and he needs to
make sure he does this for all matches. He also regularly communicates with his other officials.
Lowther understands that it is important to be consistent when making decisions and he has
been praised for his consistency when refereeing matches.

RECORD OF QUESTIONS/ANSWERS
ASSESSOR QUESTION 1
If a ball goes into the goal off a defender’s hand what is the decision?
LEARNER RESPONSE 1
As a goal has been scored the ref should play advantage and let the goal stand and not award a penalty. If the
ref thinks it is deliberate he may caution the player though.
ASSESSOR QUESTION 2
What’s the decision if the ball hits the back of a defender’s arm from a hard shot by a forward standing two yards
from the defender, but the ball would have entered the goal had it not hit the defender?
LEARNER RESPONSE 2
I would deem this to be non-deliberate handball as the defender has no time to move out of the way. In my
opinion no offence has occurred as it was not deliberate handling of the ball I would let play continue.
ASSESSOR QUESTION 3
What do you think are the important aspects of communication as an official?
LEARNER RESPONSE 3
It is important to communicate with the players and the other officials as they need to know what your decision
is and why you have made that decision. If you do this then the players will know they can trust what you are
doing. It is also important to make your decisions quickly so that they know immediately what is happening.

Marking commentary on MB3 sample learner work
The centre provided a witness statement which detailed the learner’s ability to demonstrate advance officiating skills in football. It
contained details of the complex situations that rules and regulations accurately and consistently were applied to. There were also
details of matches that he had officiated. Also three questions were asked and the responses documented in order to quantify the
mark awarded. The witness statement also states that the learner’s communication and use of hand signals was good. The centre
has awarded him a mark of 12 this is because when he is the main referee in the U14 league he can sometime be a little hesitant and
does not always keep up with the play. This is the reason he has not been awarded a higher mark.
Why it was awarded MB3 not MB2
The witness statement uses all the terminology in the assessment criteria for MB3 and details how the learner has demonstrated
their ability to meet all the criteria giving examples of how this was achieved.

How to identify areas of improvement in football
What are the key skills in football?
I analysed my performance in football. Within football there are many key skills and basic tactics which are required
to ensure there is a good overall performance in sport. The main generic skills needed within football for outfield
players include:Skill
Shooting
Crossing
Tackling
Dribbling – right footed
Dribbling – left footed
Strength

Weakness
weakness
Heading
weakness
Volleying
strength
Intercepting
strength
Passing – right footed
strength
Passing – left footed
1st touch

strength
Good tactical awareness within football is also crucial in games, and can often be the difference between a team
winning, to losing a game. The main generic tactics in football include:Attacking
Defending
Set Pieces
Counter attack
Corners
Free kicks
Positioning
Playing out from the back
Formation
Blocking off the line
Screening the pass
Closing down players
Closing the angle
Off the ball
Goal kicks
Skills can be simple, complex, open and closed. Football, because it is mainly played outdoors and because of
the way that it is played in a game situation, tends to have more open skills because of the environment in which
it is played.

SAMPLE LEARNER WORK
Which key skills and techniques are my strengths in football and how they affect the game?
•
I identified my strengths as shooting; crossing tackling; intercepting; volleying; dribbling, passing right
footed and first touch
•
I believe I do these things well as I have a good technique when shooting which allows me to get into good
positions in the box and I can connect with any ball passed to me and direct it toward the goal. (this is
classed as a complex skill as an attacker needs to be able to control any ball they receive in a goal
scoring position and direct the ball towards the goal)
•
Communication is another one of my strengths, I am able to communicate well with my fellow forward
or forwards if there are three of us in the front line. I also communicate well with the midfield which is
important as I need to be in a position to move forward with the ball into goal scoring positions
•
Passing to my fellow forwards or to a midfielder if they are nearer goal than me is one of my strengths as I am
able to read the game and look round for team members who are in a better goal scoring position than I am
•
Lastly, my footwork is good enough to mean that I can move quickly and with balance along and around
the goal (this is classed as a simple skill as footwork and moving quickly is a skill used in a number
of sports).
Which key skills are my weaknesses in football and how they affect the game?
•
I also identified my weaknesses. These were dribbling, passing left footed and heading
•
Passing with my left foot is also another one of my weaknesses. I often can’t get height or as much distance
on the kick with my weaker foot as my stronger one. This means that I cannot start counter attacks quickly
if the ball starts on my weaker foot. I can only pass short. This often means that I put more pressure on my
team mates as if I’m being closed down by a player and don’t have the chance to switch to my stronger
foot, I only have the option of playing short. By being able to play long with my weaker foot, I’d be able to
clear the ball quickly reducing pressure, and possibly starting an attack.
•
Ensuring I have a good set position when the ball comes into me from a corner is essential to giving me
the best chance of scoring. Often the ball will come in towards my head and as my heading is one of my
weaknesses this may prevent me from scoring. This is due to the fact the set position provides a balanced
position; this means there is more chance of my connecting with the ball and scoring (this is classed as an
open skill).
Methods to improve my own performance in football
I am going to specifically target two of my weaknesses for improvement. These two weaknesses are passing and
dribbling with my weaker foot and heading.
I have chosen these specifically as I believe they have the biggest detrimental effect on the game, and on my team.
By improving my passing with my weaker foot, it will improve the general attacking and the counter attacking
within the team, as it means we can move the ball up the pitch quicker, and with more accuracy. Improvement in
heading will mean that when the ball comes in from a corner I am more able to connect with the ball and either
head it towards one of my team members or head the ball towards the goal and score.
Improving on these aspects of my game also improves the team’s confidence and morale, and both increases the
attacking chances we have and increases the chance of the team scoring in a game.

SAMPLE LEARNER WORK
I have constructed a six-week action plan. This action plan is specifically developed to target my weaknesses, and
to improve and to develop these skills. Each training session will be for the duration of one hour, once a week; it
will include warm up and a cool down. After drills and practices have been done there will be an opportunity for
me to apply what I’ve learnt into a small or full sized game. This will help me transfer the skills to a more realistic,
game like situation, providing me with more experience of using the new skills to my full potential. I have selected
a certain number of repetitions and sets to complete to fully ensure that I benefit from the plan. The action plan is
also specific to my weaknesses and ensures that there is progression throughout the weeks to truly challenge and
improve myself, and also a change in drills to ensure that tedium doesn’t take place.
Different types of practice
An example of my action plan is given below
Weakness 1 – passing with the left foot
Weakness 2 – heading
Weakness 3 – dribbling with the left foot
Drill 1 – Weakness 1
My coach will being be giving me a demonstration and explanation of the correct technique to follow then
kicking/passing the ball with either foot. They will then specify the parts of the technique of which allow a player
to kick the ball with height and gain distance on their kick and other technique points.
This type of practice is a part practice as the skill is broken down into parts. Each of the parts of the technique of
kicking the ball are practiced and then the whole skill is performed. The whole skill being performed is also a type
of practice.
I am then going to stand with the ball on the 6-yard line of their box and have a receiver stood around two yards
out of the 12-yard line. I am then simply just going to practice kicking the ball to the receiver, focusing on using
the correct technique to kick the ball. This type of practice is fixed as it is practicing a specific skill repeatedly
practiced in the same way.
The focus in this drill is to simply use the right technique and perform all the right teaching points, and to simply
get used to kicking the ball with my left foot. If I am finding the distance too easy to add a progression to the drill
then the receiver will move an extra yard further away from me to see if I can continue to get more distance on my
kicks, whilst still using the correct technique.
I will perform 20 kicks with my coach at one distance, and if I am finding this too easy, then add in the progression
for another 20 kicks. After every 20 kicks I will allow my coach to give me feedback on my technique, such as
leaning back more to get my foot further under the ball, and provide my kick with more height.
Drill 1 – Weakness 2
My coach will begin by giving a demonstration and explanation of the correct technique to follow when heading.
My coach will specify which part of the head should connect with the ball. He will then tell me the correct
position my body should be in in order to successfully connect with the ball when moving. The correct position
for heading the ball is connecting with the ball in the middle of the forehead. You must keep your eyes open. If
you do not connect with the ball on your forehead but connect with your nose or the top of your head it is going
to hurt and as I have done that before I know it hurts which is why I need to practice. When I have got used to
heading the ball in a static situation I will progress to jumping to head the ball.

This type of practice is a part practice as the skill is broken down into parts each of the parts of the technique of
heading the ball are practiced and then the whole skill is performed. The whole skill being performed is also a
type of practice.
Once I have achieved the correct body position and made contact with the ball I will then move on to accurately
heading the ball back to the feeder who will be 2 metres away. When I can do this 20 times I will move onto
practising with three other people.
This type of practice is fixed as it is practicing a specific skill repeatedly practiced in the same way.
We four people will form a square and one player will throw the ball to me when I am facing him. I will head it to
another player which means I will have to direct it to my left. He will catch it and repeat the move. After doing this
4 times we will change direction and do the same heading to the right.
We will then progress to us all being close together and head the ball to one another in a clockwise direction then
an anti-clockwise direction. We will then move further apart repeating the same sequence.
The practice then progresses from us starting off in static places to moving around so that I can practice receiving
a header and directing one on the move. I will then practice jumping to head the ball as this will reflect what will
happen in the game situation.
This type of a practice is a variable practice as the skills are being performed with the feed coming from a variety
of positions dependent on where the other members of the group are. This reflects what will happen in the game
situation.
Weakness 3 the practices described for weakness 2 can be adapted for weakness 3.
Types of practice
Variable, i.e. the skill is practiced in the range of different situations that could be experienced in a performance.
Altering context of performance
As I progress from week to week my practices will include defenders and attackers playing a more active role in the
practices to make the situation more realistic and ensuring that I practice against a good standard of player as the
defenders in my team are of a good standard. By practicing against defenders of a good standard this will help me
improve my game.
Use of tools to aid evaluation
When I play matches and during my action plan my coach and the assistant coach will do match analysis and
analyse my action plan skills to see if I need to modify my action plan to include further skills that I need to
improve. I will also ask for any videos that have been made of my matches and will watch these and these will
help with improving my drills in my action plan and devising drills for my action plan.

How to measure improvement in skills, techniques and strategies developed
Completion of proficiency awards
The FA runs courses throughout the school holidays in my local area. I could go on one of the courses. I could also
contact my local football league club to see if they run any FA courses.
Keeping video diaries, keeping individual logs of performance and monitoring competition results over time.
In monitoring the success of my action plan I have videoed my performance before analysing it. In analysing
my performance it is clear to see that after drills were performed my skill levels became more consistent and
technique improved.
I was gaining more height and distance on my kicking, as well as greater accuracy. My heading is improving and I
have even scored two goals with my head and managed to head the ball to my teammates. I am able to jump up
in order to head the ball when it comes in from a corner.
This meant that the attacks would be started quicker, and less pressure was put on my defence. It also put the
team in a better positioning in an attacking sense due to by increased ability to switch play with either foot.
Due to the fact I have increased ability to kick with my weaker foot, I am more adaptable, making me a bigger asset
to the team. The improved collection of crossed means there is a higher morale in the team, and more confidence
in myself. These improvements were due to the repetition of practice of the technique, and the progressions to
more game like situations.
I will continue to monitor my performance and keep an individual log for all of the matches that I play over a
season and monitor my improvement.
Peer observation
As can be seen from the comments I have made above my team had greater confidence in me as an attacker
and they praised me for my efforts. This boosted my confidence and I felt I contributed a great deal to my team’s
performance.

Marking commentary on MB3 sample learner work
The learner has provided a detailed review of his performance. He has also listed a range of football skills, identified his strengths
and weaknesses and stated how important the skills are to playing the game. His practices include details on the types of skills they
are; what types of practices they are and that they are progressive. He has got a section on how improvements will be measured
and what impact that will have on the team. A witness statement accompanies the work. The centre has awarded him a mark of 12
as the practices for weakness; only 3 are briefly described.
Why it was awarded MB3 not MB2
The learner has produced all of the information required in great detail. He has listed and identified strengths and weaknesses. He
has stated what impact on the game these have. The practices described state what types of skills they are; what types of practices
they are and the methods used. The practices are described in detail. There is a great deal of information on how improvement can
be measured and what affect that will have on the team.
