Resume Writing By Rabia Sarwat Introduction • A resume packages your assets into a convincing advertisement that sell you for a specific job. • It is professional employment seeking document that presents a summary of an individual’s education, professional training, experience , skills, abilities, achievement and references. • Main objective of a resume is winning a job interview by highlighting the applicant’s fitness for a particular position. Introduction • Writing an effective resume represents one’s current skills, abilities and background. • For every new job requirement new resume need to be composed. • There is no right design for a resume. It largely depends on person's background, employment need, career goals and area of specialization. Parts of Resume • A resume contains heading, position sought career objective, education work experience, specific skills,achievements,activities, interest and references. • Heading section includes contact information which contain applicant’s name, full postal address, telephone number, fax number and email address. Parts of Resume • Position sought: It is an optional section particularly mentioned when applying for solicited job position so that employer may be able to distinguish from other available job position. • It is not necessarily included when applying for unsolicited job position(job position that are not advertised) Parts of Resume • Career Objectives: It should be a specific one sentence focused statement expressing his career goals in relation to the targeted position. • For example” To contribute to the growth of a high technology materials engineering enterprise by working in a position where I will have opportunities to utilize my exposure and experience in modeling and designing steel structure and my hand on experience in using FEM/FEA soft ware. Parts of Resume • Some resume may include professional summary in place of career objective. It is a one sentence statement listing the applicant’s most important qualification, skills and work experience. • For example: Five year of experience in providing customer support to users of the industry leading network, routing, switching, security as a CCNA professional at CONVERGYS Education • Here specific details regarding applicant’s education and professional training must be included. • Name of institute ,year ,degree title should be mentioned. • Start it with your recent educational information. Follow reverse chronological order. Work Experience • Brief overview of applicant work experience in reverse chronological order. • Add company name, job title, date of employment, job responsibilities, activities and accomplishments. Special Skills,Abilities,and Aptitude • Add skills, abilities, and aptitude which are in relevance with job requirement. • Hard skills are related to the specific technical areas whereas soft skills are personality traits like leadership skills, communication skills. Activities and Interest • Extra curricular, curricular , professional hobbies and interest must be mentioned. • These activities show you as a dynamic and energetic person. Achievements/Accomplishments • This includes scholarship, awards, distinctions, certificates or anything that could prove your achievement. • References: Some employers may need references from person who know applicant’s work performance and competence through professional interaction. • These persons may include teachers, supervisors., guide or colleague Types of Resume • Chronological: It focuses on education and experience. • skills can be added at the end. • Functional: Accomplishment and skills will be added first whereas education will be written at end. • Combined Resume: It is designed according to the potential of the candidates
