Use of Smart Watches In Plant Area is Restricted
Issue Date: 25 December 2023
WHY IS IT RESTRICTED ?
WHAT IS
INTRINSICALLY SAFE?
USE OF SMARTWATCHES
The use of smart watches and similar wearable electronic gadgets
such as fitness trackers is restricted in the classified areas (All
Plant Areas) as per the requirement stipulated in the Health,
Safety, and Environment HSE Handbook PRT-000-PRC-012 and
based on international standards’ requirements..
Any non intrinsically safe electronic device shall
only be taken inside plant area with a valid PTW
Intrinsically Safe equipment comprises devices
that have been designed to be incapable of
producing electrical or thermal energy and sparks
under normal or abnormal conditions sufficient to
ignite an explosive atmosphere, even if the device
has experienced deterioration or has been
damaged.
Any non-intrinsically safe electronic gadget
including smart watches with rechargeable
battery are not safe to be used in plant areas
(classified areas).
• Restriction is required as compliance with applicable
standards for classified areas.
• The function to make/receive calls or even take
pictures/videos is now often built into the watch itself
which makes it a security concern.
• Use of smartwatches in plant can create distractions
for personnel involved in critical activities.
• Wide range of quality and specifications of
smartwatches available in the market, make it
impossible to exercise effective control / segregation.
Are there any exceptions?
• The restriction does NOT apply to electronic watches operated on non-rechargeable battery cell
(regular quartz movement watches working on button cells) since it does not have enough energy to
ignite a flammable atmosphere.
• Intrinsically Safe devices may be used in plant area with PTW and proper justification.
